In Jagersfontein South Africa seven native laborers died and thirty six were wounded in a mineyard riot sparked by a dispute over a native death. Whites were also injured as natives drove them into a mine tunnel before 60 armed whites arrived to disperse the mob. The town remains under armed farmer detachments.

Over the past year the National Life Insurance Company of Montpelier reported assets rising by 2,000,021 with new gains in premiums and surplus up to 2,700,551.27. Interest receipts reached 2,751,083.70, policyholder payments were lower due to favorable mortality, dividends payable rose to 1,109,714.85, and total insurance in force stood at 194,354,053. The company has paid policyholders 64,434,656.11 over 32 years, with substantial growth in income, assets, and insurance in force during the period.
Mrs Mary Jo Wheaton widow of Clarence A Wheaton died at 2 15 this morning at 4 Aver street after years of heart trouble. Born February 10 1850 in New York she lived in Troy Albany andbury before moving to Burre where her husband led EL Smith and Cos quarries. Survived by daughter Mrs Aliexage ier A Milne and four sons Clarence Wheaton Burr Montpelier Willa Wheaton and Ray Wheaton both of Barton. sisters Mrs Tom Golden Albany and Mrs L Brady East Otamgo. Funeral Monday 2 pm at home. interment Elmwood cemetery. Flowers by request.

Rutland Jan 10 The Pittsford Power Co funded by Ruthand Railway interests and Moors Cabot plans a 250000 investment in a new power house near Slab City Chittenden and pipelines. The project increases water power at Chittenden reservoir enabling expansion to supply Rutland Springfield Claremont and beyond with elevated voltages. Construction by W S Harstow Co starts immediately with 100 workers soon and completion aimed by spring.
