Three fishermen bravery saved the Evelyn crew after a wreck off Ile Aubois on the southern New Foundland coast. Their small boat reached the schooner, ferried the mariners to a ledge, and a rope line pulled them to safety as a perilous rescue unfolded along towering cliffs.
Cipriano Castro former president of Venezuela arrived from Europe and was held by a federal inspector before Judge Holt in New York. Hearings argued for release on a writ of habeas corpus but the judge quashed the writ. Castro saluted the Statue of Liberty and the American flag as a curious crowd watched.
Bail bonds totaling 240000 were posted in San Francisco for Olaf A Teitmoe and Eugene Clancy, convicted dynamite conspirators sentenced to six years in Leavenworth. A stranger walker warned of a split rail on the Williamstown division risking a serious accident. The train from Barre to Williamstown returned with section crews sent to inspect the line while track walkers searched ahead. Authorities notified via L C Morgan and Williamstown agent. several crews went to Williamstown and back to confirm the rails were safe.
Chicago on Jan 1 two pickpockets diverted from a train at Park Street station. William Marr of Forrevin was in transit to Denver when a thief relieved him of a purse containing 170. He reported the robbery to South Clark Street station and continued his journey.
