Berlin reports via wireless that Russian troops renewed assaults, gaining ground along the Aa river while being repulsed in other sectors. The official statement notes strong fortifications and a major action in Moldavia, including the capture of the Rumani an town of Fokhani and about four thousand prisoners taken.
Paris reports Greek royal forces ready to strike the Allies once given orders by Germany. Ex-minister M. Diomede accuses Major von Falkenhausen of directing the Greek staff since the war began, organizing artillery concealment, Athens Berlin communications, and reservist mobilization. He cites 40,000 troops held by the king and a potential 75,000 with reservists.
Rome Paris dispatch reports the conference concluding with cordial comments from Italian traders. The aim is firm action and united effort. The meeting closed yesterday after a second visit, with all sides stressing unity and resolve.

Five crew members of the American ship Roy undertook a 700 mile motor boat voyage in a storm damaged vessel after abandoning their Viking ship near Havana. They sailed to the Madeira coast, drifted waterlogged for days, and were rescued by the steamship Mesico from Havana. They reached Madeira and reported the long, hazardous voyage to authorities.
Berlin reports at a banquet in London hosted by the American Association of Commerce and Trade that Germany desires only neutrality and equal treatment. Dr Helfferich and other German leaders asserted neutrality for both sides, while Ambassador Gerard noted improved U S German ties and large German charitable support. guests numbered 175, including ministers and officials, with toasts to William and Wilson.
Reported Saturday night encounter near Zapata Texas between First New Hampshire Infantry patrols led by Major Orville E. Caine and Mexican filibusters crossing the Rio Grande at Avenful Bow. Four Lachase children from Maple street were in a coasting accident at Witt and Maple due to a traverse collision with Jack Bertram’s auto on Railroad corner. Two were seriously hurt. two others injured, one with a fractured elbow. All four taken for X rays or treated at home. police had warned against coasting on Maple street.

Funeral service for Franklin W Carpenter son of Mr and Mrs Chestey was held at South Clitch church after a shooting incident. The vestry and many mourners attended including boy scouts and Sunday school members.Bearer party included six young friends and pallbearers Norman Simley Colin McDonald Melvin Lynch Robert May Edwin Woods and Sherburne Potts. Burial followed at Mt Pleasant cemetery.
Henry F. Bowtell of Bellows Falls committed suicide by hanging in a shed after months of ill health and despondency. Born January 10, 1845, he lived in the town and served as local agent for the Boston and Maine railroad. He had been unable to work recently and was a member of several local religious and fraternal groups.
Dr Onias M George, a Bellows Falls physician and legislator, died last night after a long tenure in town service. He lived in Bellows Falls since 1865, served as bailiff, trustee, and first selectman of Rockingham, and drew widespread attention for aiding over 900 visitors last year seeking his services.
Loot taken from the J Henry Lavigne liquor store at 47 Main Street includes a Colt revolver, several bottles of whiskey, and about one dollar in change. Break–in occurred Saturday night via broken glass after cutting wire fencing. no injuries reported.
James J Riley died today after being shot while riding in a taxicab with Miss Mildred Melsian in Brookline Massachusetts on January 4. Riley did not give a statement before his death. Melsian remains in hospital reportedly recovering from gun wounds.
The Hospital Aid Association annual meeting approved the year’s work, noted 476 members in good standing, and detailed purchases of sheets, nightgowns, robes, and linen. Flower day in September and bag day in October raised funds. secretaries and officers for 1917 were elected, with Farnham as treasurer reporting cash on hand and garden sales income.
Jacob Jacobson faced a breach of peace charge in city court for disfiguring a man with a beer glass in a North Main street saloon. He paid a fine of 20 and costs totaling 8.25 after deputies arrested him with a warrant at the Matson farm. Witnesses say the clash began during an argument and escalated when Jacobson struck Heckela in the cheek with the glass, the tumbler breaking as he brandished the weapon before fleeing and later seeking medical dressing for the wounds.

Spanish residents of Barre and Montpelier suspect Constantine Gomez a stonetutter killed in Syracuse Kansas. A body found on a railroad track carried shoes sold by Charles H. Shipman of Montpelier and a calendar from the same store, plus an address slip for 6 North Main Street Barre. The man claimed before death he was robbed of his ticket and money while boarding with James Gomez at 296 Barre Street Montpelier.

At the annual meeting the Universalist church elected Homer C. Ladd as superintendent with Mre. Carr as assistant and Carrie Crooks as secretary. A long list of committees was appointed including visitation, benevolence, hospitality, church membership, and Sunday school and missions with numerous members named.
The county committee of Washington county farmers met in Montpelier to plan county organization activities. M Jones was elected president and Mr Corliss secretary treasurer. A state meeting in Burlington next Tuesday will set policy and name a delegate to Boston for the New England meeting. Frank Clack of Williston is favored to represent Vermont at that gathering.
Miss Bertha Kathan of Putney, a stenographer in the Holstein Frisian office, was brought to Memorial hospital with a bullet wound in the back after Dexter Kathan, her younger brother, accidentally discharged a loaded 22 caliber revolver while home for Sunday. The accident occurred at the Latter home in Putney and the severity of the wound is not yet known.
Clinton Hugher a prominent Barre builder and contractor died Sunday morning after a three week illness at his home 425 Washington Street He was born December 25 1811 in Granville son of Willard Hugher He moved to Barre 32 years ago and built many houses including the entire west side of Richardson Street and six on French Street He also supervised the Barre fire station Ward School two Barre Town schoolhouses stone sheds and the Howland and Currier blocks He later ran a tapi knitting mill in Keith Avenue He is survived by his wife two daughters Mrs Fred Smith of Boston and Miss Evelyn Hugher of Barre and two sons Roy Hugher a clerk at the Barre postoffice and Maurice C Hugher Funeral services will be held at the house Tuesday afternoon at 2 o clock Rev G L Lipeky of the Hedding Methodist Church officiating Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in the Gunily lot beside a son who died years ago.
Mrs Mary L Knight wife of W G Knight died at her home in South Barre Sunday evening at 7 2. Her decline spanned four months. Born Mary L Morea in 1865 she married Knight in 1884 and moved to Narre over 24 years ago. She was a member of South Teatre grange and Narre Congregational church. Funeral at the Knight home Tuesday at 2 30 with Rev W Barnett officiating. Body to be buried at Hope cemetery in spring. Grange services to be held before traces of attendance requested.
John Gilman Eastman died after a weekslong illness at age 78. He was born in Gurind and resided in Orange and Ble eae Wife. A prayer service was held at Eastarse to Washington and burial followed at the Washington cemetery. Family included Eugene, Ark and Mark, with service details at the Baptist church.
Funeral services for C J L Matthews were held at the church with rites conducted by Rev Hower. Clergy and city officials attended and interment is planned in the community cemetery after a lengthy illness.
