Sixteen officers and civilians were summoned by Bow Street magistrates to answer charges over mismanagement of army canteens. Reports say bribery and corruption were widespread, and court martials were deemed unable to cover the scale of the scandal. Names of the summoned were withheld.
Albany residents greeted former Governor Sulzer with a welcome in front of the Hotel last night. Jay W. Forrest led a porch concert and Sulzer spoke briefly. A banquet and speeches followed as Sulzer and his wife met with admirers and reporters.

He chose to give from his personal wealth rather than the Carnegie Corporation to ensure the gift would be seen as coming from his own pocket and likely be better appreciated.
Jan 5 a fire at the Thana! Usedeal dormitory in Charlestown damaged a wooden building housing 10 students. The blaze began in a dust chute and nearly all contents were saved. loss estimated at 820,000. Tufts baseball coach Bernard Lee plans to start 1914 team practice with captain Bernard Lee returning and several top candidates vying for infield and pitcher roles.

Mrs. Mary Jones aged 1, feeble, died after a stove fire trapped her while supper was being prepared. Neighbor Mrs. Joseph Ryan twice saved her in prior dangers. last night Ryan reached the Jones flat, wrapped her in a blanket, but Jones had already died from severe burns.
Boston January 8 Governor David Walsh in his inaugural address warned the Boston and Maine situation endangers northern New England's development. He urged forming a new corporation merging leased lines with the railroad to rescue investors and prevent receivership. He criticized costly Pullman and American Express contracts and urged constitutional reforms including initiative and referendum, biennial elections, and woman suffrage.
The funeral for Mrs. Wyman, wife of Hiram F. Wyman, was held at their Valley Street home with Rev. William Davenport of the M. F. church officiating. Born February 1886 in Rockingham, she was daughter of Deter and Abigail Wilson. The couple would have marked their 67th anniversary February 23. She leaves her husband, two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Bearers were Walter W. Slack, H. Marleton Slack, J. Milton Stark, and Allen J. Crosby. Burial followed at Summer Hill Cemetery.
William Bicknell died at his Main Street home after years of heart failure. He was 74 and born in West Fairies, moving to Norwich at age nine. Survived by wife Mrs Sarell Citer, son Edmund Carpenter, and daughter Mrs Clayton Sargent. He served in the Fourth Vermont regiment, fought at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, and belonged to the Louietell post, G A R.
A prominent conservative, Viscount Cross, died in London aged 91. He served as a government official and was active in politics for many years, with his passing marking the loss of a long-time public figure.
Western Federation of Miners president Charles TL Moyer secretly left Chicago last night and will arrive in Hancock Michigan at noon to testify before the grand jury investigating his deportation. Efforts were made to keep his departure from becoming known.
Simeon Baraxaolo, 25, was rushed to North Adams hospital in critical condition from burns sustained while sleeping in a hut at a New England Power & Construction work site in Somerset, Vermont. He and coworkers were entz, others escaped unharmed. Cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The Addison County Cultural Society met in Middlebury to review fair finances and plan future exhibits. Officials reported 1013 fair revenue totaling 771.43 with 5 752.90 from general tickets and 2 082.00 from race premiums. John E. W. was reelected president. Col S. A. Isley and William Huck named vice presidents. Frank C. Dyer secretary. Charles F. Rogers treasurer. Directors include William A. Lawrence, John H. Donnelly, and Lophie B. Avery. Auditors were Joseph M. Burke, Charles A. Chapman, and John A. Fitcher. The group urged livestock quarters, a 1 000 building, and plans for county school exhibits. A farmers’ institute with Middlebury College and the agriculture department was proposed for Morgan Sock Farm at Weybridge, with a wine show and prize money to be announced.
Albert E Nei, 13, son of George Nelson, a Portland painter, was killed yesterday afternoon when the elevator counterweights struck him on the second floor of Burnham and Yonung’s establishment. Nelson had been moving about the place and lifted the gate as the elevator started, after which the weights fell and crushed him.
Report states Chris Habe and Har zien were wed at the Episcopal rectory by Rev. Parker in Claremont. The couple, greeted by friends, returned home soon after the ceremony. A related note mentions a mystery slaughter of a hen on Washington Street.

Burlington Dan Lagasse, about 20, jailed on a charge tied to an early Wednesday robbery of Henry Pecor, a Delph veterinary visiting Randolph for a short celebration. Pecor, intoxicated, cannot recall full details. Lagasse located and arrested on an issued warrant after Pecor reported being robbed of about $4. Pecor says Lagasse offered to take him around, drinks were consumed, and a sleigh ride ended when Pecor was struck and robbed. Pecor later sought aid, identified Lagasse, who promised to settle and hold Pecor until arrangements could be made.
A Middlebury board of trade was formed last evening with John M. Thomas as president and John E. Weeks as vice president. The group, including EP Seymour as secretary and Philip B. Crane as treasurer, drafted a constitution and bylaws. The next meeting is January 1, and dues are set at 3 dollars. The session was held in the Mione Lane club rooms with Judge Weeks presiding.
The Waterbury women's club and University of Vermont host Vermont's first free institute at the village hall in Waterbury January 4. Rev. Hugh McKenna of Providence is named curate for St. Monica's parsonage, succeeding Rev. A Griffin. Bishop J J Weeks of Burlington approved the five year service. McKenna was ordained in Montreal and studied at Holy Cross Worcester.
George E. Davis aged 42 native of East Montpelier died after months of illness in Heaton per Mostieliers. He faced rheumatic disease and Brights disease and was employed previously in W. H. Davis's Chelsea store. Survived by his father Capt. Timothy Davis and brothers W. G. Davis and others. Funeral from W. E. Davis home East Montpelier Saturday at 2 PM.
Application filed in chancery court by Capital City Press manager Charles Parker requests appointment of a receiver for the New England Farmer Co. amid debts and unissued subscriptions. Writ served on president O. Martin. directors Parsons Crockett Parker and Phelps named. Publication noted in Capital City Press.
The body of Horace W. Bailey who died Tuesday night was taken to Newbury this morning. Deputy Marshals Frank A. Chapmin and Edward S. Whittaker accompanied the hearse as services were held earlier by Rev. Arthur Bralford at the Yeo Versa building. Funeral plans are set for Friday at the Methodist church in Newbury.
Washington DC reports ongoing attempts to settle a separation dispute involving Chairman Bilinttof and officials at the department. Authorities floated the possibility of invalidating the separation of the New Haven from the Pall River Line system and the Interstate and intrastate tramways of New York region, all under New area control, as part of the company reorganization talks.

Deputy Sheriff I.7 Martin, from Franklin County, returned to St. Albans with John Wildgoose, 18, wanted in Taltrond city for forgery. Arrested at his father’s Beckley Hill home by Chief Sinclair on a warrant from State’s Attorney Gaylord F. Ladd. Wildgoose to be arraigned in St. Albans city court before Judge N. N. Powlette.
A wedding ceremony at the home of Mr and Mrs Alexander of North Math Street last evening joined their daughter Margot Halles to Tava Neton. The couple were attended by two others and a reception followed with a supper. Reverend Wood Memttie of the Church of the Good Shepherd officiated.
