London reports a massive coal miners strike with about 750000 workers off the job by midafternoon. Government moves to push through hurry legislation to enforce resumption of work. Railroad workers pledge to stay clear of troop trains as non union goods targeted. Miners press for control over terms of any settlement.
Lawrence Mabey reports a record number of textile mill operatives at work as the eight week strike continues. The Socialist party opens its halls in Seamoint Market, Presbyterians meet tonight, and William Treneweth returns from Concord after a relative’s illness. Granite Mutual plans new offices near Aldrich Building, Gordon ships puppies to Burlington and Minnesota, police station improvements continue, Indian club holds a social with Papin’s barges ferrying guests to Williams Town for a banquet, with music by local players.
Addison County residents attended a grange meeting in Wall to form the County Fish and Game League with George Shambo of Middlebury as temporary chair. Officers elected include President R W McCuen Vergennes Vice President M F Barnes New Haven secretary Norman Foote Middlebury and directors from Addison Weybridge and Vergennes. The group urged Vermont to adopt a statewide trout law as before and plan a second Wednesday in February for a formal annual meeting at a place to be announced.
Five young men were escorted from the room during Dr Broderick Anok's lecture on the Conquest of the Pole after loud outbursts and growls. They withdrew to the back of the platform as order was restored and the audience dispersed. The talk included photographs and a brief description of Peary, with Mr Cook drawing limited interest from the crowd.
A Montpelier special meeting saw residents debate rescinding a purchase of the Corry lark property for a school site. The vote, led by women present, ended with strong turnout and proposals to fund the full share and reconsider the deal. one speaker noted the price of 17 300 for the Carry Dark property.
Reverend obituary notes the death of Eruetue 1. Baker at 1 AM from consumption after long illness. Born April 17, 1882 in Abes tertild, he was one of seven children of Civer and Sally (Tek Wer) Baker, all now deceased. He worked for the Vermont Central railroad, served as deputy sheriff and tax collector at various times, and was known for public service. Surviving are his wife Abbie J. Salford of Colchester and three sons Engene, Willian Us, and Rutps, plus two daughters and two daughters-in-law. Funeral arranged at his late home on Pwart Street tomorrow morning at a specified hour.

Williamstown announces a chicken pie supper on March 1 from 6 to 8 PM at the Congregational church. All are invited to attend and enjoy a cordial evening.
Fire departments from Attleboro and Pawtucket battled a blaze near the Pawtucket line in Attleboro Mass causing about 3200.00 damage. The fire destroyed two large freight cars and burned seasoned lumber and dried grass as it spread over miles, with a spark possibly from a passing locomotive. Three nearby cottages were saved by swift efforts near the timber yard.
Hugh Woodrutl, president of the Barre school commissioners, accepts the superintendent post for Barre schools offered by Edward M. Roscoe of Springfield. He will start after year end, replacing D. Mathewson who resigned to become Lyndon Institute principal. Roscoe’s letter cites 22,000 a year and expresses intent to uphold high school standards and trust in the board.
Arthur Mitchell was arraigned in city court on a Saturday warrant from W Ward Carver for selling violations and bound over in 500 to county court. Robert Barelis posted bail. Ida Vallaise known as Stig Ida, tied to Granite Street search findings, was brought in and her case continued to March 7 with $500 release bail posted by Celestine Ablatt.
Meetings of the Barre Retail Merchants association and the retail clerks union were held last evening at the association rooms and at K of P hall. Both gatherings were well attended as preliminary steps were taken to form a new agreement to replace the old bill due to expire in April. Committees were elected to pursue conference talks immediately.
Ray W. Cole line, noted yeatagetar pitcher for the How ton Red Sox, wed Miss Lillian Lovejoy at noon. The ceremony took place at the bride’s parents’ home in Los Angeles. Lovejoy, a nineteen year old brunette, is sister of John F. Lovejoy, alleged alum of Collins at the University of Vermont.
In Cape Haitien on Tuesday sharp fighting broke out at Talanquaia Santo Hominga between revolutionists and government troops. Casualties ran high with twelve rebels killed and many wounded, while government forces reported twenty two casualties. Ernest Seaver, en route to Washi after his mother’s death, was seen in the city before returning to Iorichi to work at the jubouring mill.
The Adelphi Quartet of Boston performed the final lecture concert of the federation series before a large Barre audience. Joined by Mrs. Nelson B. Ballant, the group featured Robert MacKenzie and worked with strong vocal parts, highlighting Crawford and Muutting. Matthew Carlyle, once at Fort Ethan Allen, was found guilty of first degree murder in the Andrew Fox killing at Fort Ethan Allen on October 1911 and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Atlanta penitentiary. The Burlington court heard that Carlyle’s violent upbringing and family history were presented to temper the verdict.
BH. Smith of Waterbury buys the Barre bakery, purchasing the business from Elff Rovee of North Main Street. Smith plans to move his household goods to the city and take possession next Monday. Boyer, the longtime baker, has no definite plans yet for the future.
