A fire at Thomas W. Pierce's Topefield summer residence last night killed Mrs. Bra Wood and left Pierce's young son rescued from the burning house. The loss is estimated at about $12,000. Pierce was away from home when the blaze started.
A Boston woman believed to be Elizabeth McDoughall was found dead in an early morning incident. The shooter, Hiram Perry, later died in City hospital after ingesting carbolic acid. In another note, Cushing Academy defeated Vermont 30 to 10 before a large crowd.
The Brattleboro report covers W H Proctor's legal action against Hooker Corant Mitchell Co. The bill of complaint claims the company inventories overtaxation and unveils a claim of strong profits. Proctor, a director, cites a capitalized value of 120000 and net profits above 40 percent for six years. The company asserts shares at 153 and no debts in three years.

Mise Flerwhee Barber, a hospital matron from Ne Falls, wed Teun W. Peck, a member of Pek Fev, in a ceremony reported yesterday. The couple plans to reside in Montpelier, where Peck is employed at the firm’s center.
Judge Carleton, longtime Washington County probate court official and Montpelier civic figure, died after a brief illness at his Riverside Street home. Born August 28, 1838, in Barre, he studied at Barre Academy and the University of Vermont, practiced law from 1865, formed Heath & Carleton, served as Montpelier’s judge and state constitutional delegate, and was survived by his wife, two children, a brother and two sisters. A Washington County Bar meeting was set for the next morning at the county courthouse.
Edward W. Harlow collapsed while talking to customers in the Montpelier office in Montpelier this forenoon. He died within fifty minutes after the stroke as colleagues attempted to revive him. Emergency efforts included frigid limb massage and urging him to rest while awaiting further assistance.
