Burlington February 24 One week ago Tocadey the Queen City Cotton mill posted notices that if workers did not accept a ten percent wage cut the mill would close. Workers given until Monday to decide. Despite some illness workers accepted the decrease due to scarcity and high costs of raw cotton. The mill employs about 500 men on a 60 hour week with daily wages from 1.25 to 2.00 dollars. The cut will continue until raw material supplies improve.
In Birmingham on February 2 a deadly blast caused numerous deaths and missing persons. Rescue teams recovered up to four dozen bodies and searched the wreckage as officials concluded some victims may have drowned rather than suffocated.
