Fifty miners survived but 108 remain missing as two blasts rocked the Stanley Coal Mine twelve miles from Bowcastle England. Rescue teams faced dangerous conditions with toppled rock and fumes delaying efforts. Eight bodies recovered, fears high for those entombed.

Born in Manchester March 4 1825 he had lived in the jail as its trusted tailor for fifteen years, spending most time in cell 13 and making clothes for inmates. He was committed in 1868 by Roxbury court for a petty offense and had since remained a familiar figure at Dedham jail life.
Taggett and F. Marion Crawford produced The White Sister in this city last night. Hackett faced court after a hotel debt dispute, was fined ten dollars, and jewelers obtained a warrant for theft by false pretenses related to a $500 board bill at Stratford hotel.
Admiral Sperry via wireless to the navy department named the battleships to remain at anchor in Hampton Roads until a period after the president’s review. The Connecticut Virginia Louisiana Wisconsin Georgia Illinois Kearsarge and Kentucky will be in or out of commission on arrival at the navy yard for repairs after inspection. The remaining battleships will serve Hampton Roads as home yards for repairs following the inspection.
Washington February 17 An amendment to the naval appropriation bill was adopted limiting the two authorized battleships to 21,000 tons and a cost of 4.9 million dollars each excluding armor and armament. The House proposal had two 20,000 ton ships at 4 million each. An amendment by Mr Clapp tied the ships’ armor to that on the Utah and Floridam, with the two 21,000 ton ships to be constructed under similar terms.

Joel Allen former captain of the Vermest University 1902 baseball team died after illness. He worked for Timeis Steel Company in Chicago and later in engineering roles before his death. Survived by a brother in the north. He was Phi Delta fraternity member and known for his frank genial manner. Funeral services will be held in North Hero on the 18th.

Tickets for the Spaulding-Goddard basketball game sold quickly this afternoon after going on sale at two oclock at Red Cross Pharmacy and Kendrick's drug store, following prior sales at two schools. About fifty youths gathered at Fred J. Rock’s home in Wiebeberville to honor Lincoln’s birthday with games music and a surprise gathering. W E Lappin presented a watch fob and signet ring from the group as he arrived home to a celebratory night lasting until daylight with sandwiches cake fruit and other refreshments.
Florence G Mackintosh daughter of Mrs eas a ea Park street and Theodore J Charbonneau of Montreal were united in marriage at St Monica’s Church attended by sister Miss Bana J Mackintosh as bridesmaid and Edward W Sibbey of Montpelier as groomsman. They will reside in Montreal after the ceremony.
