Principal Turkish stronghold in the east has been the objective of repeated assaults. Reuters dispatch announces its capture today as Soviet forces advance, marking a significant shift in the theater of war and signaling a major battlefield development for the region.
London reports three British attempts to retake trenches southeast of Ypres failed. French efforts northwest of Tahure in Champagne also yielded no gains. Weather slows western fighting. eastern front snowbound with no major events. Exorum reportedly captured by Russians per Petrograd telegraph via Berlin.
New York on February 16 fire destroyed the steamships Troston Castle and Pacific and the New York Dock pier at Pioneer Street in Brooklyn. The Pallaxia was damaged, about twenty five scows and lighters burned, two coolies missing, losses exceed ten thousand dollars. Incendiary devices suspected as ships contained war munitions bound for Russia. The blaze began in a pier building.
In renewed combat near Ypres a German assault penetrated along the Ypres Comines railway line, driving into our front at about 800 yards while other attacks were repelled. A heavy bombardment continued on both sides as forces engaged.
State building bids opened in Montpelier by the building commission show George T. Kelly of Yonkers as the lowest bidder among 21 for the complete building along with separate bids for electric work, steam fitting, and chowhring. A morning blaze in Fall River destroyed dozens of buildings in the business section including an apartment hotel and major retail stores. Firemen from Newport Taunton and New Bedford aided, but three hours of fighting left the wooden tenement area menaced before flames were checked. Allan W Reid leaves Vermont Marble Co to run the Standard Granite Co downtown office in Aldrich building. Douglas M Barclay splits time between office and Granville quarries while Reid dedicates full attention to local and outside orders. Sophia Sewell assists Reid in the new role as office staff expands to meet rising demand.
Funeral notices report the burial of Mrs Antie E Bill of Montreal after her death at home. The Church of the Good Samaritan held services with Rev. Mettle officiating. The service included prayers and a brief eulogy as pallbearers and mourners gathered for the interment.
In Hollows Falls on Feb 1 Mrs Sibel, county's oldest woman, observed her 6th birth anniversary at nephew Harley J Huntoon's home. Born Feb 15, 1817, she taught in Langdon Charlestown and Arworth earning 85 cents weekly, later two dollars. She learned tailoring, worked in Proaty, married Rufus Guikt, lived in Methows Felts, and later moved to Welinwe Fable to live with her nephew. She remains active in faith, with funeral plans noted for Maretill De.
Transfer filed in Barre Town shows Mary and Gordon quarry holdings moved from Consolidated Quarry to Wetmore & Morse Grindite Co. Purchase price around 125000. Quarry joins Wetmore & Morse property on Millstone Hill and will be operated with existing holdings.
