United States government officials view the Berlin government's attitude as making an overt act likely, turning a German attack into war. They believe the question is only a matter of time before hostilities escalate, despite current posture.
Washington reports cite Consul Frost at Queenstown as saying 41 Americans missing from California list of 200 plus survivors. no overt act yet proven to trigger war, though Germany’s pledges are deemed broken. Eavestone also sunk without warning. government readies for possible consequences.
New York reports official cable that the California was torpedoed without warning near Queenstown. Consul Frost’s latest tally lists 102 survivors and over 200 aboard with at least one death and 30 hospital cases. Survivors include John A. Lee of Montgomery, Ala., among others.
Report says the California 8002 tons sailed from New York January 20 bound for Glasgow with a cargo believed to be war supplies. Armed aft, she was sunk with limited details released by port authorities. Crew members were landed after the vessel vanished near the British Isles.

Both seek 120,000 each alleging the town failed to provide adequate guard rails at the culvert where the Morse car plunged about ten feet after striking the fence. The accident occurred October 22 as the Morse party returned from Calais, killing Mr and Mrs Morse. three others were injured but survived. Attorneys H C Shuttled, Simon Searles and Graves will represent the town. next county court session will hear the cases.
The British steamship Dauntless sinks with six crew landed from a crew of 20. Two injured seamen and four others hospitalized. The captain is seriously wounded. Lloyds reports another British steamer Hollwaide sinking with the captain landed.
Boston February 4 Capt William BR Rush reports a sighting of a vessel resembling a submarine four miles off Marblehead. Capt Smith R Ross and Capt Rote observed a low hull craft veering south toward Cape Cod at 15 to 14 knots. They described a conning tower 15 to 18 feet high and other superstructure, unsure if it was American.
Cardinal Falcon, long associated with the Congregation of Religious Affairs and once a United States delegate, died today. The death marks the end of a career spanning several decades in church and diplomatic service.
