Rialto fire in Montpelier devastates Rialto block
Fire at the Rialto building on Stage Street Montpelier destroyed that structure and its contents and threatened the Union and Bowman buildings. The blaze began around 12 10 pm in Mrs Fraser millinery on the first floor and spread rapidly through upper floors. Firemen rescued occupants including Mrs Stelia Mommy and daughter Mabel and Dr Goodale, while water and ladders fought the blaze as the river threatened to endanger the Union Block. The Bowan building to the west also faced flames, and, despite heavy rainfall and city-wide efforts, stabilizing the structure remained critical as the Rialto collapsed into the river.
