The House Ways and Means Committee moved a slightly amended Farmers Relief Bill forward. The panel approved two changes: adding lemons to the commodities subject to duty and increasing the rate on peanut oil.
Washington December 2. The House Ways and Means Committee voted out the Fordney emergency tariff bill as a sop for voters in various classes. Changes added duty rates and peanut oil tax. Conference discussions drew protests that the bill was drafted to please certain interests and raise living costs. Senators pledged full consideration and resisted rush to passage.
Representative Siegel pushes a reapportionment measure to raise the House to 483 members to prevent any state from losing a seat. The House census committee plans sessions on December 28, January 4, and January 20 to advance the bill, with focus on addressing disenfranchisement of Southern states.
Wilmington Delaware December 20 Charles F Fastman assistant treasurer of the Posder company was arrested on a warrant sworn by Attorney General Reinhart after officers found evidence of embezzlement involving liberty bonds used to cover margins.
Washington reports the president lacks power to block wheat imports under current law but may use the Lever Act to halt future trading in wheat. Massachusetts Friends of Irish Freedom urge Raimonn de Valera to transfer all funds held in his name from Irish Liberty bond drive to Ireland at once. Irish reports say military and police boats surrounded the Aran island near Galway Bay to search for prisoners. Two men were shot trying to escape. others were wounded and seven prisoners were taken. Inishmaan may have housed prisoners taken in Galway. Police had previously attempted a rescue landing but were repelled.

Waterbury December 20 Luman Edmund Beckley injured at Drew Daniels Co last Thursday died Saturday night at Heaton hospital Montpelier. He lost his right arm in machinery and suffered heart weakness after surgery. Born October 1 1885 in North Montpelier to George and Lucy Beckley he married Alice Shores 17 years ago. Widowed with five children Leona Sweet Edwin Arthur Esther Luman Beckley Jr all of Waterbury. Survived by sister Mrs Charles Gidney, half-sister Miss Huth Smith, twin brothers Lewie Beckley and Clem Beckley. Employed as a laborer at Hockett plant three years. Funeral Tuesday 10 AM at Montpelier Methodist church with interment in Poplar cemetery East Montpelier.
Two armed men robbed the Seamen's Mission on West Street in broad daylight seizing cash from a clerk and fled. A three year old, James Russell, was fatally struck after attempting to intervene. Detectives report the robbers wore masks and used a revolver and stiletto.
Dee Washington reports the ginning of cotton bales including American Sea Island and Egyptian varieties. Data show 1281 Sea Island bales and 6236 Sea Island bales, with 9 DoIWGgO talon and other totals in a fragmented log of 19 amounted 9.
Funeral service for Newton Lord was held at East Barre yesterday afternoon at 2 with interment in Ramage City. Many friends and relatives attended the ceremony at the East Barre Congregational Church.

A Graniteville incident left Homer Metz with a broken leg after he separated two dogs and was pushed from a doorway onto an icy sidewalk. Metz, 26, a quarry worker who served in France, was treated at Barre City hospital. Accused owner Peter Adame, employed at EK L. Smith & Co., reported the altercation.

The funeral of Laura Ditty, who died Thursday at her son Windsor Ditty's home, was held Saturday in Williamstown's Methodist church with Rev. A M Markey officiating. St Albans three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs William Marquette of Bixhoy Street died from convulsions linked to eating oysters in broth at supper Friday night. She grew ill with another convulsion and died. Survived by parents and infant sister Elizabeth.
