In Paris a luncheon honoring President Wilson underscores renewed Franco American ties. Wilson declares the hearts of Americans touched by French and Belgian sufferings, signaling strong allied sympathy amid wartime strain.
President Wilson spoke at Paris city hall amid ceremonial welcome from Paris officials led by Adrien Milhouard. Milhouard praised the United States for liberty and justice as Paris hailed the president, promising enduring friendship and shared resolve against central empires.
Paris dispatch reports President Wilson and Premier Clemenceau discussed peace conference issues in a general conversation at the Murat residence. Wilson may not attend Italian king’s fete but is expected to exchange calls, and it is believed he will visit American troops on Christmas at Treves.
Rome reports in the Senate that during the war Italy lost 1000 officers killed and over 30000 wounded. General Zupeli noted higher manpower relative to population, with war costs totaling 4 to 5 billion lire. Premier Orlando said demobilization not possible and warned of ongoing material needs. A commission was named to assess Italy's damages.
Washington December 16 under an order by Postmaster General Burleson new long distance and toll rates will be set nationwide starting January 21. About 70 percent of rates will drop with some slight increases in night services. Day rates will be cheaper, and basic online service will be adjusted based on an air line mileage.

Extension of commercial attache and trade commissioner service recommended with new posts planned in Rome Ottawa Mexico City Santiago Athens and travel to cover districts. Countries eyed include Colombia Venezuela the Dutch East Indies Egypt South America and New Zealand.
Dec 16 Copeham reports a Hamburg formed council demands control of the merchant marine. A Berlin dispatch notes Berlin says the dairy division of the United States Tidende threatens to sink all ships if the demand is not met. C Shirley Eastern States Industrial League field manager, coordinates with State Commissioner Prighaa for a conference in St. Allans on Dec 1.

Washington December 10 reports the largest ever grown winter wheat crop expected in the United States with about 49 027 000 acres sown this fall. Production projection about 705 000 000 bushels exceeding the previous record by roughly 80 000 000 bushels. Conditions on December 1 rated at 94 5 percent of normal. rye area about 6 520 000 acres, up 1 700 000 acres from fall estimates with crop condition at 89 percent of normal compared with 84 1 percent last year.
Boston reports the state board of arbitration and conciliation has summoned Granite Manufacturers Association of Quincy and their employees to meet at the State House to avert a labor dispute. Workers demand a minimum wage of 4 for an eight hour day, claiming they earn 4.80 under an agreement signed in 1916. The association offered a 72 cent daily increase, which the men rejected.
News from Rye N Y reports the death of Mrs Susan Seymour Leake wife of Joseph Leake at her Rye home yesterday morning from pneumonia following influenza She was 29 and is survived by one son and three daughters Her mother died in an automobile accident just over a year ago The Leake family had ties to New York and spent summers at the Seymour homestead and a North Hero summer camp.
Amsterdam Dec 16 The Telegraaf says it understands William Hohenzollern, the former German emperor, has refused to depart Holland after official representations warned his continued presence could bring serious difficulties. He was told his free departure would gratify the Dutch government.
Polish government reports a rupture with Germany over Polish interests in disputed provinces. Governor General Von Besier and the German mission staff are ordered to leave Polish territory after a telegram from Warsaw cites German actions as contrary to Polish interests and the war with the Bolsheviks continues.
Mixy Lonien M. Gridley starts welfare work for the city, assigned by the city council, with duties at the city farm on Merchant Street extension. She will work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and report to the mayor's office, focusing on surveying conditions, aiding needy families, and expanding relief efforts in cooperation with churches and other agencies. Gridley, a veteran social worker, brings ten years of experience from New York, Richmond, and Montpelier.
The trial of Finte ve. George Greenslit of Warren for shooting Heath is set for Thursday morning in Washington county court at Montpelier. About ten witnesses are directed to appear. Attorney-General Barber and State's Attorney E R Davin will present the state's case, while J Wand Carver will defend. The Greenslit trial is expected to be brief, then State v Williams or State v Hunley will proceed.
William McGrath a prosperous farmer and trusted citizen died Sunday at age 84. Born in Northfield he was son of Thomas and Ellen McGrath. He married Anne Tierney thirty years ago and she survives with five of their nine children John McGrath Providence R I Edwin McGrath Kannasity Missouri Joyce McGrath Camp Devens Kenneth McGrath in France Agnes Lewis Lebanon N A Two grandchildren and two sisters Mrs Thomas Reeves and Miss Mary McGrath Burlington also survive.
The French steamship La Lorraine arrived in New York on December 16 with notable passengers including Mrs Theodore Roosevelt Jr, Mrs Vincent Astor, Mary Vanderbilt, and Commander W S Crossley the American naval attache in Madrid. Also aboard were aviators Ted Ford and Van Dyxer Burton among others, with details clipped from the Lafayette squadron context.
Albert Almerett was arrested in Montpelier this afternoon on a charge of at fault with intent to commit repo. He was brought before Judge Harvey in city court. The alleged offense is tied to a crime on Saturday night. MyJorett is about 16 years old.

Waterbury reports the death of Dwight Ayers who died Saturday night of pneumonia after influenza while a toy tester at a Morrie ville plant. He is buried at Stowe this afternoon. Survived by his wife four month old son his parents three sisters Fleurene Ayers Mrs. SW Allen Maidstone and another sister in East Charlotte.
Letters show Private Paul D. Gordon of Barre was captured Oct 3 while with the 8th engineers near the front in France. A Limburg Germany card announced he was a prisoner of war in Germany and in good health, with a Sept 7 letter describing front-line duty and rest, while his family awaits further word.
John B. Wilfore of Willamstown reports from Washington that Private Frank Wilfore, formerly of entry C company, was killed in action October 25 while with the 26th division. He enlisted in early summer 1817 and served overseas, leaving surviving parents, three sisters, and two brothers in France. A service will be held at St. Sylvester's church in Graniteville Wednesday at 8:15 with Rev. Joseph Turcot officiating.
Private Edward A Mayo listed among wounded in action with unspecified degree. He is brother of Mise Marie Mayo who lives at Hotel Barre. Mayo joined the colors in New York and was attached to M company of the 18th Infantry when the division went overseas. He has been in service since January. He is ten years old and related local residents.
