The steamship Celtic bringing Mrs Muriel MacSwiney widow of Cork's lord mayor reported heavy weather delays and says she passed Nantucket at 4 am. Quarantine may delay landing until later today or tomorrow. A tug may bring her ashore for the planned harbor reception with Miss Mary MacSwiney aboard.
St Albans December 3 Peter four years old son of Mrs Josephine Murray Water Street is in a serious condition at the hospital after burns sustained yesterday afternoon at home while playing with matches. Mother was away working and five children were left at home. Nearly all clothing burned off and the body burned in various places especially neck and arms.
Frank J. Frediani 34 from Barre died in Chicago at 2 15 am on Wednesday. Born in Carrara Italy he was the only son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Frediani of Barre. He served in the coast artillery in 1918 and married Rose Sladek in August 1918. He worked at the Fore River shipyards Quincy before sailing for Chicago. He is survived by his wife a sister Mrs Mary Arragoni. Funeral plans await his wife’s arrival with services likely at a former home on Second Street Sunday afternoon.
Ismay Garrity of Wilder and Percy Keir of Craftsbury were fined 1004.85 each for embezzlement from post offices they managed. Their attorneys cited army service and a cash mix up at the store and post office, with shortages since resolved. both paid the fines.
Edward Barcby, 55, of 273 West Street Burlington, was found dead at his home in the afternoon. He had lived in Rutland for 25 years. Survived by his wife and several relatives including A. Camp of Water and Mrs. Raymond Clark of Smyree, NS, plus a brother John in Schenectady. He was a barber and member of the Odd Fellows lodge in Wallingford.
The Ladies Union of the Universalist Church opened its annual sale and entertainment in the church basement with a well received program presented by younger members. Booths for fancy work, parcels, candy, food, and a campfire display followed, and a palmist will join the afternoon and evening features with no admission fee.

Judge H. B. Howe sentenced Joseph R. Batten alias Henry Anderson alias J B Harper to ten years in Atlanta Federal Prison after Batten pleaded guilty to five counts of using the mails to defraud. Batten, age 52, had operated under the Anderson Produce name in Bellows Falls and later Georgetown, with letters to farmers offering higher prices. He has prior prison terms in Louisiana Texas and Kansas and faces indictments in four states. The court rejected requests for a lighter sentence citing health and the need for a warning to others.

A blaze at the U Aja Granite Co plant in Montpelier damaged the circular quarry facility by several thousand dollars early today. Manager Mr Aja carried 3000 dollars of insurance and believed it would not cover the loss. The fire started mid building where finished stock was stored and spread before the fire department arrived.
Runaway pair of horses hitched to a two seat sleigh in lower Merchantstree startled residents yesterday afternoon. After leaps and jumps over obstacles, one horse slipped and fell, both were thrown against a telephone pole but no serious injuries occurred. The owner Thomas Jamieson and several onlookers helped control the animals as damaged harnesses and a broken sleigh were found. A small girl on the rear of the sleigh escaped serious harm as the horses bolted past Main Street and toward Jones Nye’s livery.
Martin L Johnson, age 45, died yesterday at 3:20 PM at East home of Mr Henry Howse after days of illness with pneumonia. He lived in Northfield with his family, leaves a wife and four children Alice J Fannie 9 Mark and Raymond, plus three other children and siblings in Georgia and Craftsbury. The funeral will be at Congregational Church in Northfield with Rev Jawers Ramage officiating, burial at Wilson Cemetery.
