Berlin reports 4000 British prisoners captured as German forces recapture some Cambrai sector territory. London confirms heavy fighting with repulsed assaults on a wide front near Graincourt and the Bapaume Cambrai road, following General Byng’s drive last week.
Paris dispatch reports the German assault on the Verdun front last night was defeated. The war office notes no infantry action, but artillery was active north of the Chemin des Dames and along the Meuse right bank. French and British batteries destroyed an ammunition depot near Monte, a strong enemy patrol was repulsed, and three German planes were shot down in bombardments across Doiran, the Cerna bend, and Monastir vicinities.
American National Guardsmen started actual practice with automatic rifles at multiple ranges in France. They fired all day and demonstrated strong rifle handling.
