Paris reports a new Verdun victory north of hill 804 with three fortified works near Bethincourt captured. Prisoners rose to 101, including a notable increase. French aviators aided the advance, flying low with infantry as lines and messengers were disrupted by shellfire.
Paris reports Hill 304 the last German stronghold before Verdun fell at dawn. French infantry, breaking the positions in a dash, captured the remainder of entrenched Germans and then advanced 2000 yards to secure the hill. Hill 304 and Le Mort Homme dominate the surrounding ravines, depriving Germans of observation.
Washington reports war expenses in August topped 24 million dollars per day, with two thirds going to the allies. The treasury says daily outlays average 8,085,652 for U.S. needs and 16,375,000 to the allies, including a new Russian credit. Since the war began 140 days ago total disbursements reach 2,387,490,086.
The New England coal committee issued another appeal to dealers to speed up unloading coal shipments. They warn that without faster unloading the needed supply for the region cannot be brought in. Eight to ten solid train loads of onuphretic coal will arrive, along with large supplies on mixed trains, under the committee's arrangements.
Sofia reports Premier Radoslovoff reiterates Bulgaria's desire for peace in response to the papal peace note. He says Bulgaria has pressed for peace for over a year, hopes for a swift settlement, and warns that delay may prompt the Entente to regret their stance.

Springfield Massachusetts August 25 Vermonters from Fort Ethan Allen reach Gump Bartlett in Woesifield Massachusetts and are to be amalgamated with Rhode Island and New Hampshire cavalry. They arrive in heavy marching order with tents left behind due to late company assignments and rain, but remain cheerful despite disruptions.
Brattleboro Aug 25 A letter from Miss Marion Rice reports she and two other Evreux hospital nurses were decorated by the French government with the Palm Academique for national distinction in fine arts. Dr Fitch, head of the hospital, was awarded the Legion of Honor medal.
The Caledonia County Bar Association hosted a complimentary banquet in St Johnsbury with 65 guests. Elisha May presided as toastmaster and speakers included Edward A Took, Judges Taylor Goodwin Slack and others. Guests of honor included Lt Noel Noyes and Capt Richard Stafford, with members of the Chamberlain post also in attendance.
Defendants represented by Alexander Dunnett and B M Webber file motions to set aside the master chancery report by Judge H Darling in Burlington. Plaintiffs P B Cloyes et al claim $113,000 damages after a ten year case review. Defendants include Middlebury Electric Co, Brandon Italian Marble Co, Isaac L Rogers, Clarence Wells, A P Tupper estate, and the village of Middlebury. A 400 grounde o exceptions bill accompanies the motion. trial expected at December county court term.
Norman Knapp of Poultney appeared before the district hearing to obtain leave for France. The board postponed action and noted nothing would prevent a young man from taking the trip, with questions remaining about his specific assignment. The record indicates further deliberation planned for Saturday as the corps plans departure for a seaport bound voyage.
The district board of appeals announced that 82 men were certified from Orange County and 2 from Windsor, partial lists for military service. Plattsburg New York August 25 fourteen hundred men from New York Massachusetts and Vermont the last batch for the second officers training camps are due to arrive today bringing total camp membership to three thousand. Requisitions for campaign hats and leggings placed six weeks ago have not been filled leaving arrivals without full uniforms. A shortage of regular army officers as instructors and company commanders is noted with only twelve assigned, necessitating six companies to be led by reserve officers who graduated at the just completed camp.
Washington reports the Leyland line steamer Devonian was sunk by a U boat but all crew were saved. The crew included 65 Americans many signed on at Barton as hostilers.
Danbury manufacturers end seven week strike and reopen operations in New Maven, Connecticut. Workers staged a prolonged walkout affecting local industry. Company leaders announced resumption of production as open shops.

Six Barre men left the city by automobile for Plattsburg to enter the second military training camp for officers. The party includes Guy R. Other Barre applicants accepted for the Plattsburg race are Ko Dole and John T Hubbard Spaulding High School faculty members to depart from other points. They reported this afternoon with training set to begin when reveille sounds at 5 46 Monday morning.
One new polio case reported yesterday in Montpelier involves Violet Johnston, six, daughter of Alex Johnston of 44 River Street. The disease remains localized to her section with a cluster there while only one other case exists elsewhere in the city on Hubbard Street.
