Gen Mangin's Army holds the south bank of the Oise River and nears Noyon while British forces start new drives. German defenders are under pressure and stretched. the battle concentrates on flanks with the enemy squeezed out of Noyon in places.
Paris and London reports say French forces under Mangin advanced toward Noyon, reaching the Ailette and Oise lines, with German retreat and strong French contact along the Picardy battle front. Humbert’s units pushed to the Ailette, while Britons and French press the German withdrawal across northern fronts.
British troops hold virtually all of the Arras Albert railroad and push east of the line. Northward success allows tanks to pass beyond the rail and reach toward the Bapchume Arras road. Reports say attackers advanced along the Ancre river and captured objectives south of All.
London reports British forces attacked and explored a German position north of Bailleul in Flanders. A strong local counterattack yesterday morning against Paris was repulsed, with fighting along a 20 mile front from Lansigny to the Allotte river. Fresh German counterattacks are said to have developed east of Mirau.
Reports say artillery fire remained heavy overnight and continued into the morning, with continued bombardment described as highly intense by observers.
On the French Front in France Aug 29 Havas reports a bold operation that began with a successful thrust by a battalion of chasseurs. Divotte wood a fortified position delaying the advance was seized in a sudden dash and the battalion moved to the outskirts of Lassigny crossing the town chasing retreating Germans. By noon a company of engineers cleared the town and captured the last occupants hiding in cells.
Paris reports that the occupation of Lassigny by General Humbert’s army may speed the capture of Noyon as Mangin and Humbert press toward the Oise. German defenses between the Gironde and the Somme are described as pivot points, with signs of retreat possible to the Ailette. British attacks north of the Ancre near Bayonne raise enemy concerns as front lines shift in 1916.
London reports British units attacked between the Somme and Ancre rivers and crossed the Arrasuin railway. State news says between 2000 and 7000 enemy were captured yesterday while British troops reached the village of Neuf Berquin northeast of Merville.
Paris reports General Byng's army facing desperate defense around Bapaume and Achiet yesterday and last night as control shifted multiple times. French troops have reached the Ailette river at several points, while German intent to retreat toward the Oise is considered unlikely to automatic.

The disaster left the hospital in ruins and prompted widespread rescue efforts as officials tally the dead and wounded.
Huntington W Va Aug 22 a militia troop resisted by United States marshals and posses moved into Mingo county where they clashed with armed army deserters in a cave hideout. Deputy Sheriff George Dillon and a deputized civilian were killed. The deserter leader warned authorities to withdraw and said more fighting would occur unless surrender. Two deserters were shot during the engagement.
Sweden says a new commercial treaty with the Allies will curb shipments to Germany. It provides Sweden with credit and licenses export of wood, iron ore, paper, and other goods to Allied governments in exchange for cereals, coal, oils, sugar, rubber, cotton, metals, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, copper, and other essential supplies. Axel R. Nordvall announced the terms in New York.
Paris Aug. 22 The allied forces have captured more than 100,000 German prisoners since July 18, according to Maree Hatin reporting from the field near Paris.

In Rahway New Jersey on August 22 Arthur J Khupser superintendent of the Perth Amboy sugar factory and Eva Janny a Perth Amboy hotel cashier were shot to death. The bodies were dumped in the street and no clue to the killer was found. An automobile linked to Rupest containing Miss Janny’s hat and wraps was found abandoned two miles away.
A Canadian port reports the American schooner Sylvania sunk yesterday by an armed trawler, the raider formerly the Triumph captured by a German submarine. The Pasadena and Luveille Schnare were also sunk or attacked. crews reached port safely. Sylvania built in 1910 at Gloucester and owned by Sylvanus Smith & Co with Captain Jeff Thomas.
An Italian steamship arrived at an Atlantic port after a running fight with a German submarine off the New England coast last Tuesday. Five crew members were wounded and the vessel sustained a six foot hole amidships from a shell. The engagement lasted about three hours.
A British freight steamship arriving from the Azores was attacked by four U boats off Nantucket. The torpedo was fired and missed by about 20 yards, according to crew members who reported the near-miss in Atlantic Port on August 22.

Salt Lake City Utah August 22 seven enemy aliens from the third war prison camp at Fort Douglas lie in the post hospital with buckshot wounds after an attack on a guard yesterday. Local officials say the incident prompted a tight security response and investigations are underway.
Two hearings were held before State Food Administrator Brooks in Montpelier on sugar rule breaches by W. C. Middlebrook. He was accused of allowing relatives to use his sugar card and buying excess sugar. He agreed to surrender excess sugar, pay fines, and donate $10 to the Red Cross, with one additional charge for selling 200 pounds of sugar to a Lyndonville man.
Private Wallace Lafayette of North Main Street, son of William W Lafayette, was killed in action July 31 with the 47th U S infantry. A native of South Barre, he previously worked with race horses and enlisted in February 1917. He trained at Fort Ethan Allen and Camp Bartlett, shipped overseas last May, and sent a letter last week eagerly awaiting service. His mother lives in Canada and he has several cousins serving, including Private Ernest Lafayette with the 101st machine gun battalion.
A dispatch from the war office at Ottawa reports Private William McCoy, formerly of Barre, wounded in action on Aug. in the Canadian army. McCoy, who had lived in Barre for years, served as a machine gun instructor before his wounding in the right shoulder.
