Both French and British press toward the roved enemy position and claim momentum cannot be held long. German defenses remain strong at Albert while British units reach the western outskirts. Canadians push ahead, occupying Parvillers and Damery.
Allied forces press toward Roye in Picardy with French and British advances west and southwest of Roye. Canadians clash near Parvillers and Dumery while German withdrawals, heavy fighting around Thiessourt wood, and aerial offensives mark a broad Western Front push. Escalating war activity extends to eastern regions with Red Army and Allied operations near Vologda and Archangel.
Paris reports French forces tighten grip on Roye with stubborn German resistance. Villers-les-Hoye fall seen as likely, threatening a line rectification and possible retreat toward Nesle and Noyon. Germans cling to hills east of Kibecou and defend the Eaeoe canal to avert evacuation.
Paris reports a significant French advance on a two and a half mile front west of Roye in the region of Villers-les-Roye St Aurin and Armascourt. Local fights continued on the Ancre east of Thiepvill while in Champagne French prisoners were taken and a German raid checked. Elsewhere on the front there was no activity.
London Aug 11 Field Marshal Haig reports the British lines advanced slightly south of Albert and northeast of Morin court. The northern sector shows progress with patrols pushed eastward along a three mile front between Beaucourt sur Ancre and Putisieux en Mont.
Washington Aug 16 war department briefing says there is nothing of importance to report from the sectors occupied by American forces. General Pershing’s campaign overview notes no notable events yesterday in those sectors.
London reports indicate withdrawals by German forces in recent days suggest they plan to stop the offensive. Observers note the enemy may fall back toward the Divette near the Oise. French and British advance limit German rail routes and control key ground near Peronne and nearby towns.

Washington Aug. The Fuel Administration announces the appointment of 28 production managers one for each coal producing district. Each manager will head the campaign for increased production and report to a production committee formed at most bituminous mines. The committee will include three mine management and three workers representatives and will review weekly absences hours worked and tonnage to determine blame.
Washington on August 2011 reported the shipping board began semi weekly announcements of port performances for the week ending Aug 12. Norfolk and Newport News led loading ports with ships in port an average 34 hours 42 minutes. Unloading at Boston averaged 116 hours 30 minutes for 21 ships.
Washington reports a small uptick in pneumonia cases among the troops with higher non-affective illness rates across camps. Deaths from disease remain at the annual rate of 413 per thousand.
Lord Robert Cecil praised American resolve and sacrifices at a government dinner marking the International Commission of Regulating its fourth anniversary, saying the United States has thrown its heart into the war effort and could help win within a year with coordinated Allied actions. Marquis Imperiali and R. H. Stevens echoed unity, while Stevens urged Americans to persist as the commission’s work aims to build a league of nations and peace.
Broughton Aug 16 Fire of undetermined origin destroyed three mills of the French Ward Woolen company at government plant work and a large stock of cloth for army uniforms. Loss estimated at 400000.
An Italian man of about 28 was killed when his bicycle skidded and was run over by an automobile driven by William Smith, a United States sailor from Jewett City. Smith attempted to avoid the crash and struck a telephone pole, knocking it down and pulling down wires.
Major Theodore Roosevelt Jr is cordial with Premier Clemenceau in Paris as he recovers from wounds and uses crutches. The meeting highlights ongoing health and diplomatic ties between the United States and France during 1919.
The 1014 ton Brasilian motor ship Magrogads was sunk by a German submarine off the American coast. Crew were rescued by another vessel and remain to be landed at an Atlantic port. Naval authorities in Washington reported no new information on Wednesday’s depth charge attack near Cape May as efforts continue to confirm the submarine's destruction.
Daniel J. Healy of Stoughton Mast faced Magistrate H. W. Scott after a card game at a Peart street hotel led to loss of room rent and two checks. Healy pled guilty under extenuation, admitting a run of bad luck. Judge Scott fined him ten dollars plus costs totaling thirty five dollars. police hold Healy as to payment duty.
Washington August 16 Twenty six women defying police in a suffrage protest near the White House were sentenced in police court. Ten day sentences for unlawful meeting without permits, seven received five extra days for climbing General Lafayette statue. Cases pending against many for interactions at yesterday’s first demonstration.
Washington Aug 16 The War Labor Board met in executive session in Bridgeport Conn with Otto M Eidlitz directing the hearing to fix wage awards for workers in 38 plants. Uncertainty remains on a minimum wage versus a percentage increase as a decision is awaited from Eidlitz after nonunanimous board discussions. A vegetable seed production survey notes sufficient supply for the coming season though crop conditions may keep production near normal, with foreign orders affecting seed exports.
Cottage cheese days spread to Virginia markets as home demonstration agents sponsor sales with fresh product and demonstrations. A bright wedding at Poray unites Miss Mabel Gallett and Robert T. Parents received a hospital-bound update suggesting wounds but now fear a telegram error as the man had been missing since July 26.
A St Johnsbury laborer filed a bankruptcy petition in Rutland yesterday. The petition in the United States court lists liabilities of 320.70 and 100 monthly, all claimed exempt, with the case filed in Clerk F. S. Platt's office.
