Allentown authorities report five men killed in a flare-up at three Trojan Powder dryers near Allentown Pa at 8 30. The tragedy occurred in the Trojan Powder plant area with several workers from nearby towns among the missing. Officials say no abnormal conditions were found at the scene, and local residents are named in scattered reports.
Cilford D. Croas, a colored 16 year old from Plainfield, was crushed to death early today in an elevator accident at a Norwich meal factory where he operated the lift. He became trapped between the car and the third floor.
Washington August 14 The 13th Infantry of the 33d United States division has fought north of the Somme and repelled a counter attack near Chipily. This regiment alone captured three officers 164 men and seven 105-millimetre guns. General March reported the Picardy salient has been trimmed and American troops recaptured Finmette on the Vesle. The 28th Division heavy losses at Veals July 30. The 11st regiment of Kingis national men serves with the 33d division trained at Camp Logan Texas.
Two British prisoners escaped captivity after being captured at the Marne. They fled through German lines toward Allied positions on the Vesle, enduring seven days of hunger and rough travel. They reportedly faced harsh German camps and meager rations before reaching safety.

Washington Aug 14 Registration on those aged 21 since last June's draft was ordered today by Provost Marshal General. About 150,000 young men will register. Most will qualify for service and likely be called within a month after records are made.

Barre producers vote to raise wholesale price to nine cents a quart starting tomorrow August 18 with retailers charging fifteen cents to consumers. Word arrived that Corp Baar K White of the 103d machine gun battalion was severely wounded July 23. His mother Matilda White of 14 First Street received the official telegram. White enlisted June 27, 1917, in Go. C, served in France since 1917, and in active service since 1925. He has a younger brother Napoleon in the same company. He will be 33 on the 22nd. White was wounded in a trench action soon after the ee. White also worked as a boxer for Brown & Carroll before the call to colors.
