Reports from St. Petersburg say General Kuropatkin remains in a precarious state as three Japanese armies close in north of Malcheng. A vigil burned all night at the Peterhof palace while the emperor and several ministers maintained constant contact between palaces and ministries.
Despatches from London describe heavy Japanese assaults on Port Arthur. The attacking force exceeds 100,000. over July 2 to 28, about 125,000 rounds of shrapnel were fired. Port Arthur is said to have 1,000 killed and wounded among Kuselan forces, with Japanese losses listed at 17,000.
London reports that the Permanent and Continental Steamship company announce a discontinuance of service amid doubt over a term described as contraband. The Ewan and the China Mutual companies issue similar notices.
The body of Ellery Vance was found beside the Canadian Pacific line near Tracy crossing in Newport on August 4. He was about 25, unmarried, the son of Mr and Mrs A P Vance, and his deafness suggests he was struck by a train.
Michael Carty travels to Burlington on business while F M Andreani and others take rooms in Montpelier. A large crowd, estimated around ten thousand, witnessed the Forepaw and Sella Brothers parade in Montpelier with excursion trains from multiple lines. The show then went to White River Junction for display.

Philadelphia report of a double homicide at Emerald Street where Joseph Leharon and his wife were shot by Harry Visher, the bride’s brother. Visher later attempted suicide, survived, then confessed as authorities investigated the motive and crime.
In Newfane Windham County Savings Bank safe blown open and £200 taken. George Batchelder fired, striking one burglar in the arm. The captured man jailed. two others fled to the woods. A $1,000 in the sate was overlooked.
Montpelier August fifth reports eight men appeared in city court with one charged for cruelty to an animal. Two assaults were reported to police including Charles Z. Smith of St Paul and Fred Spencer a Journal reporter, both injured. Circus followers are blamed for the attacks.
Hartford Connecticut police say motive for the killing of a Dunham Hosiery Company secretary and former Moe Monte employee on Capital Avenue appeared to be robbery. The victim, identified as a former official at the company, was shot early this morning as the assailant fled.
Norman Morrison wed Miss Eliza Melver daughter of the late Angus Melvyer yesterday with Rev MacLennan officiating at Graniteville.
In the American League Cleveland defeated Boston 11 to 1 at Cleveland while New York beat Detroit 6 to 1 in Detroit and Chicago shut out Washington 10 to 0. In the National League Boston beat St Louis 2 to 1 in Boathos, New York split games with Chicago 4 to 2 and 4 to 3, Pittsburgh defeated Brooklyn 4 to 1 in Brooklyn, and Philadelphia won both ends against Cincinnati 4 to 1 and 4 to 3 in Philadelphia.
Scanlon limited Ratland to three hits as Plattsburgh defeated Pittsburg 7 to 1. Key plays included two base hits by Garriveau and several sacrifices. Carrivean was hit by a pitch and Stroh worked the mound, with Whittemore reporting attendance and a Rutland News humorous yet appreciative note on Montpelier Barre.

A special meeting reviewed proposed changes to city code and finances. The charity committee urged repairs to the poor farm house and a building permit for a third story was approved for A Tomast on Merchant street. The city will not extend rent or payments under the Lapoint lease, and taxes for paupers were affirmed for payment.
The funeral of Frank Merchant was held at 2 PM from his Prospect street home with Rev. Brian Roberts officiating. A large attendance included lodges Clan Gordo No 12 Burns Club and Red Men. Floral tributes bloomed as pallbearers from each order carried the casket to Elmwood Cemetery.
G E Moody of Waterbury declines to have his name lie on the ticket after notifying conventions not to use it. He says the regular Republican convention ticket deserves support and will not allow his name to be associated with the fusion movement in Washington county. Moody voted for McCullough two years ago.
The St Albans Messenger reports Wells, a Vermont Senate hopeful, stating he supports the Republican state platform. He says he would not deviate on liquor policy and notes he voted for the current law in the house two years ago. The Times questioned his alignment but Wells asserts he remains true to the platform.
The Orange County Democratic convention met in Chelsea town hall August 5. H W Mil of West Fairlee was elected chairman with Vance D Conant of Westshire and H H McAllister of Washington secretaries. The ticket includes FP J Allbae of Bradford and Pierce Dickerman of Taubruga as senators, H B Martin of Corinth and Frank P Lamson of Brookfield as judges, M W Chamberlin of Washington as state's attorney, White Leese as sheriff, W Chambaerlain of Newbury and N R Farnham of Wilh iamatown as probate judges, D D Stanley of Washington as bailiff. County committee members elected A A Olmstead, A M Miller, H O Bixby. The platform endorses local option law with modifications for enforcement, condemns the colligation tax law, supports automobile safety measures and policy, and backs national and Democratic platforms. Ellsha May of St Johnsbury gave a forceful speech. Chelsea band furnished music.
