Mediators press for an armistice as a pivotal step in ongoing negotiations between the United States and Mexico. The action is viewed as crucial to advancing settlement of differences and sustaining progress in the diplomatic process.
Washington April 29. South American envoys asked both the United States and Huerta to declare an armistice to avert war amid Mexican tensions. Ambassador Dagma of Brazil informed Secretary Bryan that mediation proceeds with both sides likely to accept. Officials say the armistice would halt hostilities while preparations continue.
Mexico City report says Doctor Ignato Alcocer urged state governors to press rebels to unite for national integrity. Government warns of penalties for price-gouging and enforces official price lists as shortages trigger unrest.
The Navy reports 100 Americans landed at Vera Cruz last night, with 63 from Lomi Venito and others from Potrero Cordoba Tierra Manca and nearby districts. Admiral Fletcher says most Americans in the area are now out of the country between El Burro and Cordoba and between Cordoba Tierra Blanca and Vera Cruz. About 200 refugees crossed the border this week, all reporting courteous treatment by locals. Additional dispatches indicate remaining Americans at Mazatlan, with numbers of women men and children.
A telegram was sent to the Seventh Day Adventist mission board in Washington asking if Evangelist Thurber and his wife, long-serving missionaries to Sao Luis Velos, Mexico, had been heard from. The Thurbers, once of this city, began their work at Adventist conferences and are sister to Mrs. Pusehlais. A reply was received via Evangelist L. Pushehais from the secretary of the foreign mission.
A salon board states no word on the front cat of the missionary group while hoping they are among the safe relugers. The note expresses uncertainty about the cat's whereabouts and safety.
President Wilson extended federal protection to Colorado after state militia failed to quell violent mine guards and striking miners. The Colorado delegation, mine owners, and miners supported the call for help. The proclamation warned violators to disperse, while three troops from Port Leavenworth and two from Fort Russell were ordered to Trinidad and Canon City.

A quary accident at Wells, Lamson & Co. in Websterville ends the life of Johnnie O Herin, age about 12, son of foreman Robert O Herin. The group of youths climbed a grout heap when a nearly balanced rock toppled, pinning him. Assistants could not lift the stone. He died soon after, at a nearby home. The tragedy shocks Websterville, where he was known and loved. He leaves a mother and four siblings. The incident underscores the danger of climbing unstable pile walls in quarries.
Charles Leonard, a young quarryman at Pirie deposit in Cran gteville, fell into a quarry hole while rating a grout car. He plunged about 10 feet, struck the edge, and fell. he was rushed to hospital with fractures in the left leg near the knee and a fractured patella. He is recovering and expected to be released in about a week if no complications arise.
Funeral services were held for Leonard Relion after an accident at the plant. Clergy included Rev I M McKenna of St Monica's. Bearers from the deceased's fellow workers accompanied the interment at a local cemetery.
