Helen A Marden a Smith College senior from Somerville was fatally shot by Porter Smith a former Dartmouth student from Chicago. He shot himself after killing her as they walked on campus. The engagement had ended last Christmas and both were known in the local college community.

Brattleboro April 29 longtime Vermont governor Frederick Holbrook aged 96 died at his home on Walcott Street after a three day illness. He was born 1810 in New England’s oldest families and served as Vermont’s governor beginning in 1860. As Lincoln’s adviser he helped shape Civil War policy and taxation plans. Members of his family and Dr H J Lawton attended him as he passed peacefully.
