In Manchuria near Kaiyunan the Russians suffered about 200 dead after a clash with Japanese forces. Japanese casualties were 36 killed and 22 wounded. The engagement followed an Itvediane assault toward Changtu repelled by cavalry and artillery from Sixotatsi.
Expecting arrival, the fourth division of the Russian Second Pacific Squadron under Vice Admiral Nebogatov sails toward Penang and the Straits Settlements. British authorities monitor approaches as guard boats patrol the channel.
Hong Kong reports British steamers sighted three Russian battleships and two cruisers heading southeast near the China coast. A dispatch notes proximity to Kamranh Bay as authorities await Japanese interception under Admiral Togo’s command.
OFFICIAL SURPRISE PARTY Montpelier April 26 Gov Bell in town to lead search at the eee Ball with Mrs Bell leaves for Windsor with Lieut Gov Stearns and Speaker Merrifield to give the Generals a surprise party. From Windsor the governor will go to Rutland to institute a Pomona grange Thursday evening and Friday evening institute a grange at Hardwick.
The Re Cage convention renominated the present state treasurer Judge Bie, Orlando and Beaver of the supreme court. The endorsement backs both state and national administrations amid a campaign season.

In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania on April 26 a catastrophic shaft accident at the Delaware and Hudson company mine killed ten miners when a hoisting rope broke. The shaft reaches nearly a thousand feet and the men were lowered to work before the catastrophe left a mass of broken bodies.
In Stockbridge on a Sunday drive behind a spirited horse, eight year old Rena Perrin suffered a crushed skull and remains in precarious condition. Eli Perrin, wife, son and another companion were among passengers. the mare proved balky and the strap delivery ended when the reins tangled in the wheels. Mrs Perrin sustained fractured ribs and others were only shaken up.
In Rutland on April 26 a reception honored Father Ge, rector of St. Peter's church, who has just returned from abroad. Dr Hanrahan spoke for many as Father Ge received a cookie and 800 dollars, a united gift from the congregation. Father Gatney offered thanks for the generosity.
Sage Ga April 26 Governor Terrill in a Memorial Day address urged a national monument to the dead on both sides of the Civil War. He said the time is ripe for a lasting tribute to heroic Union and Confederate dead and to Southern women.
Albany April 26 Col William Glazier the well known explorer died at midnight at his home here of heart disease. He was born in 1841.
St Johnsbury April 26 Plummet Bacon 22 was captured by Deputy Sheriff Pollensby after a fatal shooting of John Young on Lorenzo Ash’s farm near Whitefield Nova Scotia. Bacon confessed and agreed to return to New Hampshire. The case had stirred local excitement as officers traced him from Whitetiol and linked him to a prior dispute over Mrs. Ash. The weapon was a 35 35 caliber rifle. a 80 30 caliber bullet was found during autopsy. Authorities pursue further leads and possible misattribution of the weapon.
Whitefield New Hampshire April 26 Bernard Mann, said to have been at the Askhouse Monday night when John Young was shot and killed, was arrested in Dalton today. Pummer Bacon is under arrest for the crime but Mann is wanted for giving aid to Bacon and for attempting to help him escape.
A one year old boy, son of Charles McAlman from West Derry New Hampshire, died yesterday of meningitis in White River Junction while staying with Clarence Hackett. No new cases have been reported.
P M Crowley lost a valuable horse Sunday and Fred Reissonneau logged work Monday morning for T M Crowley. Chas Charron moved from East Torre to Libernant's block. Madore left town for parts unknown. Truneau & Co plan to quarry soon and employ many. Canton Bros. hire many workers tonight. J B Sargent visited South Barre teachers. Grand Orient event drew many and was a success. W F Cutler arrested J F McFooters Sunday for selling intoxicating liquor. bail posted. Lacha Keith recovering from grippe and back injury after a fall weeks ago.
In South Framingham Massachusetts on April 20, Joseph Fuley who had recently wed Miss Mary Ducey died at the hospital after a carriage returning from their wedding was struck by a train. Miss Ducey was killed at the scene and the young man died the next morning.
A Missouri paper quotes a playful scene as a man, dressed with meticulous detail, checks the final touches before leaving. He notes his shirt buttons, cuffs, shoes, necktie, hat, and perfume, then exclaims in mock exasperation that she is not ready yet.

Northfield voters approved buying the Andrews-Emerson Aqueduct Co. water system. Possession to be given in May. The village will immediately begin installing a first class system designed by an engineer to provide fire protection and correct previous flaws.
A charity dance at the Montpelier Armory drew many city residents, filling galleries and crowding the floor. George H. Wilder led a 19 piece orchestra with soloists from Boston, featuring an overture from The Merry Wives of Windsor and a piano solo. The Everett grand piano, loaned by John Church Co., aided the concert to benefit Heaton hospital, with proceeds near 280 dollars expected for the Boys' club ball later.
In Burlington, the University of Vermont beat the University of Maine 9 to 6 yesterday afternoon. Sheldon pitched well despite not his best form, striking out eleven while allowing one hit and two bases on balls. Vermont homered for the first time this season as Campbell pitched for Maine yesterday and is set to face Vermont again.

Chief Brown and Officer Hamel seized a Central tracks car noon raid uncovering 16 barrels of California wine valued around 400 dollars. The wine, drawn from Croces Lombardi, was divided among Barre Nethfield Montpelier and others in 28 and 52 gallon casks. A warrant from State's Attorney Jackson led to the action.
The Ladies Aid of the Congregational church reported a successful Easter sale with many attendees. Volunteers ran booths including candy, baked goods, and a mower display, with a concert featuring local talent and a cream sale to finish.
Mrs Herbert E Lawrence wife of a Montpelier & Wella firm employee died at her home after a weeklong diabetes illness. Born in Northfield forty years ago she left four children John Helen Mildreth and Cornelia. Funeral at St Augustine’s church Montpelier Friday at nine o'clock.
An automobile and an electric car crowded Nelson Kennersons horse on State street last evening. The horse bolted from Central Vermont to the telegraph pole by the cannon wheel. A telegraph pole gave the horse a second wind and Kennerson halted it. No other damage occurred.
The Knights of Columbus held the final dance in their series at a local hall. About 25 couples attended as music provided by Gifheltownie and a piano club contributed to a very enjoyable evening.
