Allied troops gained near Viller-Brattoneux and Albert on the Somme front and at Robecq at the tip end of the German drive in Flanders despite a strong local German attack. British forces repulsed the assault and made two slight advances, with one enemy forward post fallen.
London reports British lines advanced slightly on both main fronts. Gains were near Viller-Brattoneux and Albert on the Somme and at Robecq in Flanders. A German local assault north of Albert was repulsed after capturing a British outpost.
Two low flying German planes were shot down by American machine gunners near Seiviceprey northwest of Toul. The gunners had orders to retire but stayed in their positions.
British aviation bulletin says weather improved but thick clouds kept planes low. Twelve tons of bombs fell on targets including Menin Armentieres and the Thorout railroad junction. Six enemy aircraft were shot down, three more were disabled, and three own planes are missing. Night sorties struck Kapwume enemy billets roads and rail junctions at Chatilnes Juniville and Bethenville with all planes returning.
Paris reports German raids along the Avre river and near Rheims were carried out last night according to the war office.
Captain Baron Von Richthofen, renowned German aviator, was killed in the Somme valley. His body was recovered and to be given military honors. The German war office later announced the award of the Order of the Red Eagle.
Moscow April 16 The Associated Press reports Adolph Joffe chairman of the first Russian peace delegation at Brest Litovsk has been named ambassador to Germany by the new Russian government.
Washington April 22 reports state the air program will be reorganized with a new executive in charge of production. Secretary Ratt is overseeing the move as a senior official steps forward to direct efforts. officials expect decisive action within two or three days.
A powerful quake shook southern California with the first tremor near Barstow, then hit Hemet San Bernardino and Los Angeles, causing one death at a resort and injuring a woman. He said he struck her with a dung fork after chasing Piper’s hogs and cattle from the field. He claimed the act followed an argument with the Piper family and stated he did not know why he did it. Mc Mann was taken into custody Saturday night with counsel W Reardon of Barton, preliminary hearing set for early next week.

The body of Horace L Kellogg arrived in Montpelier this morning and was taken to Worcester for burial Wednesday at 1 o clock. He died yesterday in Worcester Massachusetts after a week of pneumonia. He was born in Worcester May 1 upcoming 23 years ago and lived there until a year ago when he went to Worcester to work. He married Dennis Johnson June 14, 1917, of Worcester. He leaves his wife, his parents Mr and Mrs Edward Kellogg, a brother Chester, a half brother Raymond Kellogg, and two half sisters Mrs Fred Heath of Barre and Mrs Marence Witham of Quechee.
State probation officer W H Jeffrey in Montpelier received notice of Elston Sweet failing probation by burglarizing a Springfield store. Sweet was taken to Woodstock for the May county court trial. He was convicted of forgery last year at age 17 and released for his youth.
