News accounts report 3000 U S forces seized the entire city of Vera Cruz after capturing the waterfront and customs house following a sharp encounter with Mexican forces. American casualties were listed as 24.
American forces have gained complete control of Vera Cruz with firing ceasing, Consul Canada reports from Washington. About 3,000 troops landed under naval guns as Admiral Badger led an advance to occupy the city and secure the port, customs house, and warehouses. Casualties were limited, with four Americans killed and four seriously injured. Refugee trains from Mexico City began arriving as the White House signaled restraint pending Huerta actions.
President Wilson voiced sorrow over the loss of life at Vera Cruz as events unfolded. The scene described shows his somber mood, moving toward the officer, with gunfire starting at 12 30 and the transport Prairie engaging at the front. Marines opened fire from Utah and the surrounding ground, while a gun battle and bombardment from nearby positions continued.
Washington reports the Senate rejected Senator Lodge's Mexican resolution and passed the administration's armed force justification at 3:21 AM by 72 to 13. The House concurred with the Senate substitute, with Speaker Chase to sign and send it to the White House. Senator Root defended the action, stressing duties to the nation and civilized world amid Mexican tensions and the Tampico incident.
Mexican Chargé d Affaires Algara in Washington is instructed by Huerta to request his passport from Secretary Bryan. Huerta also seeks withdrawal of Nelson OShaughnessy as American chargé d affaires in Mexico City. Officials say no official recall yet. Bryan denies asking OShaughnessy to depart.
The Vermont G A R convention elected Edward Baker of Montpelier as commander and A W Adams of St Johnsbury as senior vice. Hiram M Mieree of Montpelier named adjutant and quartermaster general. W B Caves president and Mrs Fintly Maredon named senior vice in the auxiliary. The gathering included officers of the Ladies of the G A R and Sons of Veterans auxiliary with appointments across multiple towns. The campfire featured department commander Gy AL Hy and other leaders.
Bishop Frederick D. Leete presided as the Vermont Methodist conference began its 70th annual session in Hardwick with communion for over 200 attendees. The roll called three deaths and noted transfers from the Mexican and New Brigham conferences while officers and assistants were announced. Fraternal delegates from several denominations were introduced and welcome greetings were delivered. The afternoon session opened with remarks and greetings from Bishop Leete.
In Montpelier court Cynthia J. Spencer seeks divorce from Tra D. Spencer citing years of cruelty and excessive drinking. She testified of poverty, borrowing clothes, and a Warre-made outfit, with six married children and one grandchild. He admitted some neglect and traded cows for a horse, with the couple’s long separation dating back two years.
In Philadelphia on April 22 a fire destroyed the home of Juline Schulze, killing three residents the Schulze couple and their son Paul. The son's wife escaped by leaping from a window with injuries described as minor.
Eagle Pass April 22 federal forces concentrate at Balilin to repel the American invasion. A night report states volunteers from Modras Negras crossed the border near here and 1,200 men enlisted last evening as arms were issued to Houston companies for defense.
A large assembly of Masons at the Blenchard building hears reports from several officers and elects officers for the coming year. The chapter shows growing membership and renewed interest in Masonry. Officers include H P Arthur C Tilden king Withar fa Mower scribe Gordon Watsor and others. Weather outlook: partly cloudy tonight and Thursday with moderate west winds.
The Barre Board of Trade held its annual meeting at 7:30 pm with President Julia M. of Middlebury College as the keynote speaker. President Thomas summarized the Carnegie Foundation report on Vermont education. Retiring President Henry A. Phelps discussed past work and future aims, while officers and directors were elected and a dues plan approved.
City council initiated election machinery for a hotel site referendum by designating officers to be recommended to the city meeting and authorizing the elections committee to prepare yes and no ballots. They urged caution, noting the city meeting's jurisdiction and the new voting statute.
