In Washington on April 10 anti suffragists gathered in the capitol to protest a constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote. Speakers included Mrs. Arthur M. Dodge, Mrs. A J George, and Mike Lucy J Price, with letters from Kate Sousis Wiggin and Molly Elliott Sewell.

Funeral plans include Montpelier and Athol journeys.
Burlington April 19 Principal Mer Tritt D Chittenden of Essex Burlington High School was elected superintendent of schools and will take office July 1. He succeeds Henry D Wheeler who declined re election. Chittenden was one of seven candidates and his election was unanimous. Other candidates included B Jerriam Rahway New Jersey Eos Watson of New York Adams Mass Ella Mr R Hain Haverhill Mass. The 60 year old Chittenden previously led Swanton High School and graduated from the University of Vermont in 184 and studied at Harvard and Columbia.
The Ida Read WCTU annual meeting met at Mrs Flora Berkley on Park Street. Officers elected include President Mrs Wil Toys Host, Abbie Nason as second vice president, Ph Wrewe as treasurer, Mrs Denge Rising as secretary, and Flora Beckley as lower mission superintendent. Reports praised flower mission work with over a hundred bosquets and twenty sick calls. plans set to resume meetings in May.
Barre granite paving blocks fuel a surge in shipments from Barre to New London and New Jersey. Two cargoes unloaded at Central Vermont docks with more in transit, lifting local employment and signaling the largest block output since quarries opened. Miranite Rouge No 45 and B and A.M. held annual officer election at Masonic hall last evening with a large attendance. Dr HL Reed was reelected secretary for the twentieth consecutive year. Officers named include WM Peter Mutebs SW Wilkes, WR Ayert, James R Coutts, S Kidd, Henry Westcatt, James F Curtis, Alex Conti ber, and others. A banquet by Ruth Chapter No 33 followed. Weather note: frost expected with 84 winds.
In El Paso on April 19 a daring thief stole the ammunitions and breechlocks from all Juarez cannons and machine guns. The garrison, under Colonel Vasquez, lacks artillery while a munitions shipment from Naco Sonora has arrived but is of little use. Jose Pierce, a Madero official, was arrested, yet breechlocks remain missing and unrecovered.
Mr and Mrs William F Milne recently wed in New York City were toasted at a vestry reception by the Sunday school. Over 300 attendees including scouts and church members enjoyed a decorated venue, a varied program, and tributes. The couple will reside at 167 South Main. Milne works at a local care plant and leads Barre's boy scout movement.
Funeral services for William McAuley, late resident of Barre, death occurred in Winchendon Massachusetts last Tuesday morning. Service was at 2 o clock yesterday at his home on Maple Avenue with Rev. J Harnett officiating. Remains were brought to Barre via Central Vermont Railroad Thursday afternoon. Hartegers 1973 fraternity sent a delegation to the funeral, with Italian Pleasure club and Kayes members also in attendance. Interment followed at Hope Cemetery beside his mother.
Swanton dwelling owned by Jen Canfield at the East station was destroyed by fire over a stove overheating incident. Canfield, a marble worker, was away in Philipsburg at the time. neighbor Pelton of Hightente assisted. Fire cause suspected to be stove related.
A Spwukling high school entertainment featured the Budding Methuselah church campfire girls with physical culture by Mrs. Allie Trow Wishart and a polished drill. Indian garb, club work, and a midsummer blouse display delighted the audience, followed by the light comedy The Wee Bear and baron and Wohelo Service tableaux.
Street Superintendent J. C. DeBrune and a crew will realign a warped traction line from North Main and Elm to Washington and Bureau streets. The traction company bears the cost while workers straighten the rails. Washington Street’s long noted track irregularities will be reduced, with the project aimed for mid summer completion and a safer center-roadbed.
