Tokio April 14 The Japanese defend the Tsugaru Straits as a navigation restricted zone. The strait connects the North Pacific Ocean with the Sea of Japan and lies east of Vladivostok, the reported final refuge of Admiral Rozhdestvensky.
A dated report from yesterday states the vessels in the fleet are in excellent condition though their origin is not stated. The telegraphic dispatch notes the fleet's readiness as of today.
Disjointed wartime notes claim Russians advancing south through Manchuria toward Chungtufu and threaten Japanese positions near fortified lines. Reported Japanese fortifications are being probed with expectations of renewed Russian attack along the border as war news outlines strategic maneuvering in the theater.

In Indianapolis on April 18 a false fire alarm triggered a rush for free tickets, causing a deadly crush on a narrow Masonic Temple stairway. Four boys died and several others were injured as police and bystanders struggled to pull free the entangled youths.
Fire in the Ordway block basement caused about 15000 damage as ten people were endangered. Capt Langmaid aged 85 was rescued unconscious from his room on the second floor. Mary Powers, 10, leaped from a fourth floor window and was saved by a firefighter. Fire spread to E H Caswell opticians and other firms on the same floor as crews battled flames and smoke.
Dr. George E. Partridge was struck by a southbound car on Winooski avenue near Grant street. He sustained bruises to head and body after mounting his horse to escape the vehicle, which caused the animal to rear. The horse was later treated by a veterinarian, and Partridge was taken to Sparhawk sanitarium for rest. conditions improved by evening with hopes of further rest and recovery.
In New York on April 18 Lillian Bartles daughter of an animal importer fought a giant orangutan for an hour and a half in her father's store. Three men aided her after the animal broke from its cage and charged the girl. The struggle ended with the creature submerged in a goldfish tank and Bartles suffering only minor scratches.
Charles Clifford was found guilty in city court of illegal liquor selling and fined 600 dollars with 16.01 costs. Bail posted for 3700. Ifford, a clerk in T. A. Clifford’s store, was arrested and warrants sworn out by Grand Jury official EL BR. Kingsley on testimony from Charles K. Roddy that he bought a quart bottle of 400 whiskey Friday and a half pint last Tuesday. Minors Percy Higgins and Hugh Rounds testified to buying a quart of 400 whiskey. No evidence was offered for the respondent.
The Vermont conference session starts tonight in Enosburg Falls with the conference society anniversary. A Dixon presides and Rev. P. A. Baker will deliver the address. The advance guard arrived Monday with candidates for admission and advancement and committee members. Kimball Heathers orchestra will provide music for Bishop Moore's scene in the opera hall Saturday evening.

Mike Schreck of Cincinnati knocked out Geo Gardner of Lowell in the late twentieth round in Salt Lake City. The overhand swing to the neck ended Gardner’s endurance as the referee stopped the bout. The ferocious, even contest featured bleeding from both fighters and a relentless pace throughout.
In West Palm Beach on April 18, the veteran actor Joseph Jefferson showed a worsening condition. Doctors at his bedside report he is sinking slowly though he revives briefly, with Frank Jefferson confirming expects the end at any time.
In Boston on April 18, the four defendants faced United States district court action. Samuel Aeoren received 20 months in Middlesex County Jail, Charles and Barthor 12 months, and James A. Shedd 20 months in Norfolk County Jail. The cases will be appealed.
H Clay Pierce of St Louis organizes a large estate trust believed to be the first of its kind in Missouri and possibly the country. The trust is valued at 5 million dollars with Pierce holding all shares except four. One share goes to his brother in law and his personal attorney.

Miss Lena Spaulding an assistant teacher at Chelsea Academy died in Chelsea at 6 o clock after a three weeks illness with pneumonia She was born in Northfield August 10 1862 She leaves her mother Mrs J T Spaulding and a sister Mrs C H Granger both of this city Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 00 p m from the home of her sister Mrs C H Granger 41 Park Street with Rev A Poole officiating
Miss Madelina M Bottinelli died last evening at Heaton capital Montpelier after peritonitis treatment. She was a popular clerk in the Vaughan Store on Berlin Street, born in Westerly. Her body was brought to her parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Bottinelli in Berlin Street.
Antonio Comi died at five o clock last night at his Thatroot home after an illness with pneumonia. He was a stand outtir employed at Barclay Bros. shed and is survived by a wife and two children. The funeral will be held from the house tomorrow afternoon at 2 6'ack.
The funeral of Laura ae der Town wife of Luther G. was held from the residence on Richards street yesterday afternoon at two thirty. A large attendance from town filled the home as Rev. P. He officiated. A quartet including Mrs. B. W. Broley W. D. Kidder Miss Harris and F. J. He sang My Jesus thou wilt Heavenly Mansions and Nearer My God to Thee. Bearers were S. D. Allen A. G. Pay Theo Clark and Charles M. Hamblin from East Montpelier. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.
The Weat Riv er Railroad company will be formed in this city on Thursday and will rebuild the Brattleboro & Whitehall line as a standard gauge property. The New London Northern railroad foreclosure of a $150,000 mortgage with $10 costs set a March 26 deadline, or the decree becomes final and the property returns to owners.
Boston April 18 Morton of the supreme court heard the petition for a writ of habeas corpus on behalf of Arthur Appleyard. Extradition to New York had been granted by Governor Douglas on the large wrecking of the German bank of Buffalo. Attorney Williams for Appleyard will appear in the United States court for a hearing before Judge Lowell this afternoon.
Dr G Washburn of Waterbury was brought to Montpelier by Deputy Sheriff Graves to answer in county court on charges of making a prescription for a boy claimed to be under 21. Bail set at 500 dollars. The case ties to a circular by Rev Kellogg criticizing physicians in Waterbury for issuing prescriptions.
Barre management awaits confirmation from the Boston Entertainment Bureau after Robert Riis cancelled winter lectures due to health. They expect a solo appearance in Barre on a later date when a suitable house is available and Riis agrees to lecture there.
A man attempted to go down stairs in the Quinlan block but found a easier route. He fell after partial descent, suffered bumps and a druglike tumble. Rescuers carried him up in a dazed state to Dr. F. Curi, who found bruises where the stairs touched him. the stairs themselves were not damaged.
J M Boutwell resigns as general manager and treasurer of Wetmore and Morse Co quarry owners effective May 1. He notes his desire to focus on his own business and cites the need not to overextend himself. He had elevated the quarry from a poor condition to a thriving, paying operation.
