Debates cited labor unrest, loyalty of labor, and the need to balance strikes with wartime efficiency.

Amsterdam April 17 The Dutch government says it can accept the American plan to ship three grain laden ships to Holland if Holland then sends three ships of similar tonnage to America. William L. Mandigo and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at 2 pm and a gathering of the A. I. Rand Wo RC. They were married in Rutland and moved to Bellows Falls 32 years ago. He served in battery C Vermont heavy artillery during the Rebellion and later held leadership roles at Fall Mountain Paper and International Paper. He belongs to EB H Stoughton post G A R and is a former village trustee.
The railroad wage commission has prepared recommendations for wage increases for railroad employees and will submit the report to Director General McAdoo on his return from a Liberty Loan speech. The list of casualties from yesterday includes two officers killed in action, four died of wounds, one died of disease, several wounded, and two missing in action. Officers named include Thouts, Benjamin P. Burpee, Frank Miller, Lieut. Wilmar H. Bradshaw, and Lieut. Proal Judson Jr.
Tamdon April 17 Turks announced the capture of Batum a Black Sea port taken from Russia under the peace treaty terms. The region had been vacated by Russians but Armenians resisted the Turkish occupation in Constantinople.
Three aviators Lieut. Rold. Witherton of South Boston Lieut. Leo John Nugent Washburn Ia and Cadet Forrest Dear Jones Worcester Mass were killed in two Ellington Field accidents near Houston Texas yesterday. Cadet Maurice received serious injury a third accident occurred later but with no fatalities noted.

Burlington April 17 Mr and Mrs VN Buxton learn their son Vernon C Buxton was slightly wounded in action in France April 9 He also received a wound March 11 Buxton a University of Vermont III graduate served after training at Washington University He joined the service and has been in France since mid January in the gas and flame section of Co A 80th Engineers
Word from Burlington states Reginald G. Hawley of Vermont 1017 arrived in Yokohama after a Siberia crossing from Russia. Hawley was part of a 30 member group sent by the National Bank of New York to Petrograd to study Russian language and banking. Conditions in Russia forced the party to leave and reside elsewhere.
In Washington on April 11, Secretary of War Baker urged stronger backing for prosecuting the war abroad. He praised American soldiers for their courage endurance and fidelity, stressing that the nation must provide moral and material support to sustain the fight alongside France and Britain.
The Barne Board of Trade met in the granite manufacturers room last evening with about 50 attendees. Officers were elected for 1918 19 and a war chest fund was proposed to meet Liberty loan and Red Cross needs, with plans to avoid drives and rely on steady community support.
Alderman Antonio M. Rossi of the fifth ward died at home after pleuro-pneumonia. A large funeral crowd gathered Tuesday afternoon at a house service and at Hope Cemetery. Rev W J McMeattle led prayers, bearers included Mario Rielli and others. honorary escorts from Mutuo Sorrarea and Modern Woodmen joined city staff in paying tribute. Staff and relatives traveled from Waterbury and Montpelier. Joseph Connell, Rossi’s brother, was initially omitted from surviving relatives.
The funeral for Roy C Bagbee, who died at home after a week with pleuro pneumonia, was held at St Monica's Church with Fr M McKenna officiating. Attendees included Barre post office staff, Park Theatre manager J F Eames, and many colleagues. Interment followed in the family lot at Harwood cemetery.

Mrs Spranza Cecchini died at her home 37 North Main Street Tuesday evening after five months of illness. She is survived by her husband Tode Vico Cecchini and two daughters Lilia and Ida, plus mother in law Anita Cecchini. Born July 2 years ago in America she resided in Barre five years. Funeral at home Thursday at 2 pm with burial in Hope Cemetery.
Vermont notes recruitments of two colored soldiers for general service to depart in May. One hailed from Washington County and one from Bylle[s]district Na 2. Their names and service details appear in adjutant general records.
The Barre City Council passed a memorial for Alderman Antonio M. Rossi of ward 5 and unanimously approved Stefano Rizzi to fill the unexpired Rossi term. Rizzi, a granite mason born in Viggen Oct 18, learned his trade in Italy and moved to America, living in Quincy before settling in Barre. The council also fixed a $100 annual movie license fee for Bijou and discussed street sign maintenance amid claims of past destruction.
