Rebels and federals clash at Agua Prieta near Douglas Arizona as fire rakes the town. Col Shunk commands American cavalry on the border while machine guns mute and rifle fire continues with heavy losses on both sides and civilians seeking safety.
Pano Texas April 17 reports received indicate a resource deemed reliable. Francisco I Madero Jr chief of the insurrecto forces is en route to Agua Prieta where he is believed to set up headquarters. Whether this move is responsible or the abandonment of the Juarez advance is a matter of surmise. Vigilance at Juarez remains strict.
Dispatch from Chihuahua dated April 17 reports rail links between Durango Coahuila and Benchtucas severed. Non-combatants cut off, thousands stranded as men desert families to join the insurgents. Insurrection gaining momentum toward the south, according to reliable sources.
In Auburn New York on April 17 a laborer named Stokes fell into a narrow grain chute at a private barn seeking lodging. He stood or lay head down all night with arms pinned, suffocating as grain filled the chute until John Hunter and police freed him. He was rushed to a hospital and nursed, reportedly not seriously hurt.
Ossining New York December reports that Robert Francis Wool was executed at Sing Sing after being found guilty of murdering his niece in New York City a year earlier. One electric shock was administered and he was pronounced dead.
Boston April 17 a fire on the rear floor of the Massachusetts State House threatened the building this morning. It started in the restaurant and was confined to that area. Loss is not considered heavy.
Washington April 17 for the first time in eighteen years the term docket of the supreme court has reached one thousand cases. About three hundred have been disposed of this term leaving seven hundred for consideration. A silver platter will be given to ex Commodore Joseph Sibley by the Lake Champlain Yacht Club in testimonial of esteem. Sibley, now seriously ill at his home in Seansyleaste, aided the yacht club as head of the regatta and his attentions to arrangements and hosting are noted in the tribute.
Waterbury on April 17 reports a barn belonging to Charles Lease burned Saturday afternoon and the adjacent house damaged. Cause unknown though nearby flames appeared internal. Buildings were partially insured and the blaze was extinguished about fifteen minutes after alarm.
Graniteville notes a regulation involving Bummitt bodes and an event from St. Pare. The Young-Adame Company has arrived and begins a seven night engagement tonight at the opera house.
The Vermont Methodist conference released pastoral appointments for the coming year. Bishops and superintendents announced transfers and supply duties across towns including Barre Montpelier Waterbury Newport and St Johnsbury with ministers assigned to East Maine New England Southern and local circuits.
William L Switser of Sutton was bound over on a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses after a holding of a preliminary examination. Bail was set at five hundred dollars with Fred D Gilman of St Johnsbury acting as bail. The case involves a batch of farm items including oxen a wagon horse cart drag yoke chain and other gear allegedly obtained from Jed A Isley of Thetford Plainly a county court matter moving to June term.
Judge Henry G Holcomb, long time Isle La Motte resident and trusted figure, died at his home after a stroke. He had fallen ill with pneumonia earlier and passed away about four minutes after a 4 pm stroke. The funeral is set for 1:30 pm at his late home. He is survived by a son Jesse W. Holcomb of Pouxe Point and a daughter Mrs Helen Skeels. his wife June Deleste Hil died four years ago.
Thomas Maher a 61 year old New York Central flagman died last night in Lancaster while trying to save Mrs Ella Sheehan 61 and her daughter Mrs Robert Kinsella from oncoming trains. Maher shoved the daughter clear then was struck while attempting to lift the mother. Mrs Sheehan mourns her husband and daughter in tragedy.
Secretary Knox favors action on a society elopement involving Heater Harten Pittaburg steel heir and Jes D Brown, architect, with relatives sanctioning. The wedding occurred as an elopement and Knox will assume responsibility as an uncle. Telegraphed congratulations from relatives were received.
Burlington April 17 The administrator appointed under a new law to discharge a mortgage was recorded Saturday. PF H Mekinnis of Essex was named administrator of the estate of Jeremiah C Ratehelor who died in Barre about two years ago. Ratehelor mortgaged land in Essex in 1860 and the mortgage remained unpaid.
Patrick Rivers pleaded guilty in Montpelier city court to charges of ma...ult on two young girls who complained of his actions at the M and W paneen ger station. Judge Harvey sentenced him this morning to not less than one year and one month or more than two years in the house of correction.
James Shiner, an inmate at the Montpelier State House of Correction, escaped Saturday night by climbing from the bakery roof onto a yard and down to ground. He had been committed in 1910 for attempted burglary and had earned privileges, but vanished after leaving the bakers’ area with a brown bread task unfinished. Police and correction officers conducted searches in Whitehall and Middlebury as officials recovered a letter and a razor he dropped, while missing clothing may indicate he fled with a black coat and black cap.
Despite light rain and winter chill, Easter turnout was strong as congregations filled churches. Presbyterians lacked a settled pastor, Hedding Methodist had Rev. E C Thayer away at conference, Danforth spoke at Hedding, and other churches featured choirs and special music praised as among the best in Barro.
Mrs Paradis longtime resident of Montpelier died at her home after living in Burlington and Shelburne earlier. She is survived by her husband five sons including Fred E. and Arthur W. and three daughters. Her body will be taken to Burlington for burial. She was born in Shelburne about sixty years ago and her maiden name was Julia Poirier.
In Burlington on April 17 a petition seeks to determine the mental status of Anna M. Murray Edward H. Murray and John Murray ages around 70. The Murrays, heirs of Adwart Murray, live on the former family farm now mortgage held by Mary Fletcher Hospital. Local officials and witnesses Hawley and Wilder testified they believe the trio are insane.
A J Thorn stem, a Burlington resident, was struck by a south bound freight train while walking on the track between Waterbury and North Duxbury. He is elderly and deaf, did not hear the engine, and was knocked down an embankment. He suffered a shoulder injury and possible additional injuries, was hospitalized near DD Grout, district surgeon. Charles H Thornton of Montpelier is a brother. a wife is reported to live in Barre.
Charles E Pease a long time Burlington clothing dealer and elder merchant died yesterday morning after a heart ailment. Born in Charlotte he was 61 and started in a Morlington store before striking out on his own in 1874. Survived by a daughter Miss Maja and two sons Thomas and another in Colorado, as well as two sisters. City auction held this evening with O H Hale as auctioneer.
The Barre board of trade will hold its annual meeting tomorrow evening at 7:30 in the W. Averill block board rooms. Members are urged to attend and nonmembers interested are invited. A male quartet will sing and brief talks on local matters are planned, with a buffet supper. Officers for the coming year will be elected.

The opera house hosts Adams company with the Pilling drama Under the Bear's Paw and a Goddard seminary music recital titled The Story of Franz on April 19. The Italian drama Maria Giovannia drew large crowds. A Barre couple, Sena pl Anderson and Matilda Wennerstrand, were invited to marry by Rev. Braisted. they will reside at 7 Poynton Street. Pavilion vaudeville promises a three-net show with varied acts, including Willies, magic, and aerial performances. Arrivals at City hotel include multiple visitors from New York, Boston, Burlington, Detroit, and elsewhere.
Allen Graham a quarryman at the Osgood quarry on Blue mountains was killed by a blast shortly after opening time. He shouted a warning as the blast was set off, his body mutilated near the blast site. Survived by his parents in Hamilton Quebec and three brothers Alex Angus Murda all employed at Barre quarries. Burial to be in Canada.
In city court Judge Scott heard four cases. Timothy Casey of Burlington pleaded guilty to a serious offense and was fined 20.04. Andrew Fife admitted guilt for a subsequent offense and received 30 days in county jail plus 19.09 in fines and costs. Ames Sawyer changed from not guilty to guilty on a subsequent offense and was fined 1f and 4.75 in costs. Fred E Cheney pleaded guilty to breach of the peace after a domestic dispute and paid 4 in fines and 3.09 in costs. he had a badly bruised eye from the incident.
The child of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Marcelle of Montpelier was seriously burned when a kettle of hot lard tipped onto her hand and shoulders. The mother was busy in the kitchen. the girl entered and pulled the kettle, burning her left and right shoulder and arm. She rests as comfortably as possible, though the outcome remains uncertain.
Frank Machinon, arrested weeks ago on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder in Canada, was released on Saturday from Washington County Jail after U S authorities, led by Secretary of Commerce Amit Jabor, concluded no reason for further detention. His two companions were freed two days after arrest, but Canadian authorities had ordered Machinon held.
Wred Wewiter treasurer of the Quarryworkers Union received word that a new bill was approved by the union. The document reportedly enters into effect Saturday, affecting the city agreement. Woolth area actions have been under suspicion since late events.
