London April 15 Seven attacks by the Germans in the Merville sector of the northern battlefront were repulsed by the British who inflicted heavy losses. The British have lost Neuve Eglise and temporarily yielded ground south of Bailleul before counterattacks. East of Robecco, the British seized 160 prisoners and several machine guns as part of night actions.
Paris reports the war office announces French successes on the Montdidier front last night. French assaults captured positions and took prisoners, signaling a local advance in the ongoing fighting.

Washington April 1 reports say many German and Austrian women are under government surveillance and will be arrested and interned once the president signs the bill including women in the enemy warlers class. The number is said to exceed one hundred.
Washington DC April 15 Vermont and New England totals reported for the first week of the Liberty Loan Campaign. National figure listed as 620,947,550 with regional subs totals showing Vermont 2,177.44 and New England 265,590,000. Boston reports partial figures.

Also, the cargo ship Cyclops carrying 521 people remains missing after departing Brazil for the United States, with no contact and extensive searches ongoing.
Carroll G Page grandson of Senator Carroll S Page is aboard the Cyclops near Hyde Park on April 16. He is a student at the University of Vermont until 1917 when health forced him to leave. His mother is Mrs T H Page of this town.
Pvt Paul D Mills of Headquarters Company W4uh infancy A KO We Near the Buehe writes to his grandmother in Barre dated March 9 1918. He reports good health despite war conditions and asks for cigars tobacco chocolate stockings and knitted socks. He describes living in a dry ventilated cave behind the front line and notes springlike weather and long hikes.
Washington April 18 The proposed bill aims to make the United States independent of foreign ore supplies during war by boosting domestic production of ores metals and minerals. It would also conserve supply control distribution and possibly fix prices with approval from War Navy and Interior secretaries and a House committee led by Representative Foster of Ali note.
Mrs SE Baker died at her Trow Hill residence after a long tuberculosis illness. A 41 year old born in St Sylvester she lived locally and was active in Barre Presbyterian church and Cobble Hill grange. Survived by husband and children Isle Vivian Norman Laura and others. funeral Wednesday at 1 pm at home with Lipsky officiating. burial in Maplewood cemetery.
Government orders surgeons to report to Fort Ethan Allen Vermont for establishment of a base hospital. The post is well suited with its water supply and surrounding facilities, and officials note barracks may be converted to treat wounded arriving from abroad. General Gorgas praised the fort during a prior inspection.

Dr J E MeSi a former Barre physician died in Hartford this morning after an operation attempt. He had practiced at Barre many years and recently at the university medical scene. He leaves a wife Anna Blay and a son Laverne McSweeney with relatives in Burlington Boston and Washington D C. Funeral arrangements include a possible transfer to New York for interment.
Gov. Graham reported a telegram from the war department calling for 101 Vermont men to join 421 others a week earlier. They will head to Fort Slocum or Camp Devens within five days after May 1, with a shorter mobilization gap than prior drafts. The Barre postoffice clerk Roy C Bugbee died at his home 5 Richardson Street Sunday morning after a brief illness. He was born June 1 1887 in Barre and worked in the post office after assisting in his father’s woodwork business. Survived by wife Elizabeth Nichols, son Donald, mother Mrs Myrtie E. Bugbee, two sisters and a brother. Funeral at Se Meniva's church Wednesday at 9. Interment at a local cemetery.
Five soldiers died and seven were injured when a car derailed on a Long Island railroad troop train near Central Islip. Authorities blame a split rail. several derailed cars toppled into an embankment as hospital officials withhold names while government officials take charge.
Barre mourns Alderman Antonio M Rossi of the fifth ward who died at his home on High Holborn street. Funeral services set for 2 PM Tuesday with interment at Hope Cemetery. A longtime city civic leader, Rossi served on the aldermanic board since 1900 and was active in Granite City Camp A and Italian Athletic Club. He was born October 31 1885 in Bissucce Italy and immigrated with his family to Braggville Massachusetts before settling in Barre. He is survived by his wife Irene Comi a son Robert Rossi his mother and four sisters.
An appeal is heard to overturn a decision on the Laie N. Wonel estate claim of £224 89 to the Weed estate. The court considers Will of Veler Moriarty of Warren and Will of Michael A. Corbert of Berlin. Proceedings include a petition by Wilkiesom and a related enert petition.
