St Johnsbury April 11 C Firtlett a Wheelock farmer arrested Friday by order of State's Attorney Campbell on forgery charge. Bartlett waived examination and bound over to June term of the Wiedonia county court with bail set at 1000. He returned home to Wheelock with a wife and four children. State claims he passed a check for sullary drawn on a focal bank by W W Gray to a Hardwick store vendor. The check reportedly bears several signatures and errors. Bartlett denies the charge. The state attorney holds further checks exist and may be produced at next summer's trial.
An April 1 statement from the Howard County exemption board in Lincoln Nebraska reports Cleveland Alexander the Chicago National League catcher not notified to enter military service under the second draft. The board has not learned whether he will be called or when.
Washington April 1 subscriptions to the third Liberty Loan reported to the Federal Reserve Banks show total subscriptions reaching 539,420,100 dollars, more than one sixth of the minimum amount sought by Secretary McAdoo.
Mrs. Robert M. Deming of South Willard received a telegram from Washington stating Captain Deming of the medical corps in the British army was reported missing in action on the French front since March 21. A letter dated March 16 said he hoped to see action and return fine. The casualty list dated April 18 reports five killed in action, three died of wounds, two died of sickness, four wounded severely, four wounded slightly, and three missing in action, including Lieutenants Robert H. Jeffrey Samuel Miller Abraham Strauss.
