Barre Flood Destroys Streets and Damages Factories
A historic Barre flood submerged streets from Maple Ave to Sixth Street, flooding cellars and basements, washing away bridges, and causing extensive losses to merchants, granite plants, and homes. Gunner Brook burst its banks, diverting water through Main Street and Depot Square, with rail lines and the Barre Montpelier streetcar system shut down. City crews saved the Berlin Street bridge, while water damaged the Webster Avenue area and flooded Granite Park, forcing evacuations and halting daily commerce.
