Burlington April 6 Charles H Van Patten aged 40 treasurer of the Malted Cereal Co and son of a prominent family shot himself in the head today at the factory. He died an hour later in the hotel hospital. The cause is unknown. He leaves a wife Elizabeth Grinhall a prominent club woman and amateur actress a son and his parents.
More than a dozen youths reported to the Montpelier armory to enlist but only four passed the physicals. The company remains 13 men short of required peace strength. Enlistees include John Tomasi and Richard W. Hawley of Montpelier, William A. Carroll of Barre, and Henry Maloney of Waterbury. Carroll previously served with troops at the border last summer. Two rejected high school athletes were among the hopefuls, both from last winter’s basketball team. Tomasi, a fruit store proprietor in Montpelier, has turned the business over to his parents to demonstrate patriotism and enlist.
The Barre Headquarters company fund sharply rose this forenoon without personal solicitation. Subscriptions totaled 741.00 led by contributions from HH. Assistant Judges Dale and Dana presided over four divorce cases at the county court house yesterday and today heard the case of Ella Russell versus Harry Russell from Barre. The petitioner sought a divorce on grounds of intolerable severity and retreat to support. A G Fay appeared for the petitioner. Justice Miles will be in the city again Monday as jurors are recalled to resume trials. Justice Miles, a member of the Supreme Court in session at St Johnsbury, is absent from Washington County court for the week.
