San Francisco on April 5 Collector of Customs Stratton refused clearance to Altee vessels from this port on a claim by the Immigration Commissioner Ronit that aliens were landed without knowledge and against orders. The vessel Kosmos Hiner Luxor and the German bark Prof. Koch under Capt. Schutt and the German whip Magdalen under Capt. Kinn were held. The German consul protested and said North's officers were misled.

Swanton April 5 The Robin Hood Powder Co tears down part of the engine house on Depot street to construct a new wall line alongside. A new engine and boiler will be installed in the old engine house, with an addition supplying a direct line shaft to the factory. The company will install a dynamo to power the electric tower, carpenter shop, and separate loading room.

New York April 5 Charges against President Alexander and Vice Presidents Corbell and Wilson will be presented by H C Hyde at a special directors meeting of the Equitable Society. State insurance officials began a lengthy probe of Equitable Life, with Deputy Superintendent Robert Hunter directing the New York city office.
