Rivers was arrested after a months long elopement. The court set bail at 2500 and Rivers was committed on failed proceedings.
Fire destroyed the sugar house and contents on Mrs Wehr Hills farm at St Albans Bay about seven o clock last evening. The farm was carried on by John Button. The bank fire started near the sugar house and is believed to have been accidental or caused by a spark from the flames.
The annual Oxford Cambridge boat race on the Thames saw Oxford finish three lengths ahead of Cambridge in 19 minutes 10 seconds over four and a quarter miles from Putney to Mortlake. Mrs Eliza Sargent of Groton died after a long illness at her son’s home. She was born in Groton eighty four years ago and married Hosea Welsh, who died in 1890. Surviving children include Fillmore Welsh, Elbridge Welsh, Eliza Caldwell, Hosea N. Welsh, and Lucretia Ricker. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the son’s house with Rev M S Foldy and Rev S HL Myers presiding. burial followed in the village cemetery.
John E Masters known as Prof Cruick bhank died Thursday in Rutland after a five day illness. He was born October 5 1840 in Boston and spent life in the theater, managing companies and touring abroad. Surviving are his widow Helen Renton of Duxbury and two sisters in Maine and Boston. Funeral services will be held in Boston after the body is transported from Rutland.
Hert Rettell and Lillian Davis of Brandon eloped to Ticonderoga New York and were married there on Thursday morning They have returned home and the girl's parents refuse to allow her to return to Brandon The wedding was for the Furooh company at Fowler.
A 16 year old, Harry Gay, was arrested at Thetford Mines by Deputy Sheriff W A Rand and brought to St Johnsbury. He escaped from the Avenue House in St Johnsbury after spending the night, taking $30 from Rand’s pocket. His father lives in Woodbury and authorities note no intent to harm.
Emilio Casarice pleaded guilty in city court to non-support of his wife Tie fawati and their four children. He said he moved to Bonth Ryegate for health, but his wife refused to accompany him. He previously faced breach of peace charges. a warrant for his arrest was served this morning by Officer Nichols after he was found visiting his family.
John McClellan of this city was convicted of grand larceny in county court last week and sentenced by Judge Stanton to two to three years with hard labor in the state prison at Windsor. Also sentenced were Fred B. Strong and others in a related case involving assault with intent to rob. McClellan’s crime involved stealing 260 dollars from Matt Matson after intoxication.
