An official announcement says Japanese troops from Kalmyan occupied Mienhunchich Mamehuria on March 31 driving out Russians. The broader front remains unchanged with troops firing on a Russian crowd in Rwasian area as of April 5.
In Warsaw on April 3 a confrontation at 7720 Dalka Street left four dead and about forty wounded, all Jews. A socialist group gathered for a late memorial when armed forces fired on the crowd after clashes with a 20-man military patrol amid accusations of revolver fire from protesters. Police made numerous arrests.
Reports from London indicate Britain and France are pressing for a peace basis with both Russia and Japan. Despite denials, negotiations are described as conducted with consent of all parties. Russia and Japan have not sent direct communications yet.
In Pittsburg Ay 3 John C Walton killed his wife with a razor in a dining room at his mother in law’s home and then cut his own throat. He died before aid could arrive as neighbors and physicians reached the scene. The couple, married ten years with four children, had recent separations and reconciliations. No witnesses besides the family. the motive remains unknown.
Stalph W Kline a 26 year old artist was fatally stabbed yesterday by Jonnie 18 during a quarrel at a Little Conestoga fishing party near Long Park. The assailant Miss Good threatened to cut out his heart and stabbed him in the chest near the heart. He was taken to a hospital unconscious. The girl fled and has not yet been arrested.
Report from Seegley on April 2 describes a gas explosion at Joseph Leiter’s Boegler mine entombing up to fifty workers. The blast hurled debris and water high into the air. authorities lower expectations of survivors as numbers vary and chaos surrounds the scene.
Windsor April 8 officers and employees at the state prison honored retiring superintendent W Oaken with a four headed cane. Cler k Harry Goodwin spoke as the assembly gathered in the guard room. Oaken expressed gratitude for the gesture. New superintendent W S Lovell assumed duties without ceremony. Dr Dean Richmond named prison physician replacing Dr J D Brewster who served 16 years. Rev William Henry Hayes appointed pastor and chaplain of the Congregational church. John A Provtor, a keeper, resigned Thursday and moved to Boston.
The schooner Annie Gus under Captain Charles Harry of Machias met a heavy northwesterly gale off Morse Peak light, struck a rock near Mud Hole, and, after separating from the crew, reached safety in their own boat and two miles of rowing against the current.
A fogbound crash near Badham Station in Georgia between a Charleston to Columbia passenger train and a Columbia to Charleston freight killed four people and left others injured. The wreck occurred around 3:00 a.m. local time, with authorities beginning inquiries into the fatal incident.
In Winooaks on a Saturday morning the 12 year old Arthur David Murgrave, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Musgrave, fell ill around 5 AM with meningitis. Despite efforts, he died by 5 PM the same day after rapid deterioration.
In Cleveland on April 3 William Lill of 620 Breeting Avenue shot and killed ML Lewis a painter believed to insult his wife while he was away from her. James HL Hull a shoe shiner was fatally wounded. In St Albans Frank Fembley lies critically ill after his feet and hands froze during a drunken outdoor incident Saturday night.
The Boston Americans defeated the Cincinnati Nationals yesterday by a score of 1 to 0.
The old Italian Dramatic club of thin city presented The Hunchback at the opera house Saturday evening for the Barre Civic Federation of Women's clubs. The performance was fairly well attended and the cast earned praise for time and hard work. earlier in the season the federation and club bid to rent the opera house for the same evening.
Washington report says President Roosevelt, en route to the South, left Washington at 9 06 am on a three-car special train. A horse pulling his carriage slipped on wet asphalt near the Treasury building, delaying arrival but causing no injuries. Detachment of soldiers at Fort Sill to accompany the president's writing party. meanwhile Barre Vermont reports the death of A M Jackman at 92 from a paralysis stroke, with details of his long service and Barre life.
Secretary of War reveals the new Isthmian canal commission lineup including Theodore F. Shantz, F. M. Lowa, and John J. Wallace. Total annual salaries amount to 102,500, down from 126,000 for the old board and allowances.
The Boston Goddard seminary alumni banquet Friday evening featured W R Shipman of Tufts as presiding officer, J B Kent as toastmaster, and Principal O K Hollister addressing current school conditions. Speakers included Tufts professor Maulsby on Goddard in Massachusetts and poet Charles H Sta former teacher readings. Edith Kinne Hu and Mrs Carleton Kinne attended as hosts, with Prof William B Ransom leading singing.
St John Lybar of Dublin studied quarrying methods in Barre with Mrs Lybar, sent by the British government planning to exploit Ireland’s mineral resources. He toured quarries and machine shops, photographed sites, visited Rutland, Peultney and Grinville quarries in New York, and planned a trip to Boston and New York City in about three weeks.
A large forest fire near Hagarstown Michigan on April 3 destroys hundreds of timber wares and substantial quantities of cord wood and rails. Fire teams fight expanding flames as fears rise the blaze may cross the state line into Pennsylvania and into Frederick County Maryland. No exact damage estimate available yet.
In Mount Vernon area details recall early 1900s freight between Montpelier and Barre, with Ly L Worthen and others involved. Neighbors Davis Harrington Abbott families quarried near Websterville, supplying granite for a State House project by cable from quarries to Montpelier. The Thadfords led freighting by team and mail coaches before railroads, with six Morgan horses and heavy freight routes. Continued on Fourth Page.
James Matheson of Garfield Avenue, a member of Melver and Matheson granite quarrying, died this morning from tuberculosis after long illness. He leaves a widow and four children, a brother Artin Matheson of this city, and another brother in Toronto. He came to Barre from Aberdeenshire twenty years ago, initially tents for quarry work, later in firms with Andrew Burre George Ruston, and more recently with M. W. Melver before the firm closed.
The funeral of Arthur Ropes late editor of the Vermont Watchman and Montpelier Journal was held from his daughter's home at 4 Mather Terrace. The Rev L P Reed of Bethany church officiated with a large attendance of business folk and friends. Bearers were J W Parker George A l Avni George T Archer Fred Stanley Wison and Char A Webb. Interment was at Groat Mount cemetery.
A dispute at Crown and Murphy's saloon Saturday led to a brawl in which Robert Murphy confronted Beauleau and received a black eye. Neanleau pleaded guilty in city court and paid 10 dollars plus 720 cents in costs. Police expect further arrests after a lively night.
A dinner party at the country club house by the Mistes DeBoer honored guests from Welleslay Mast and announced the engagement of Edward D. Field private secretary to the president of the National Life Insurance company and Miss Ethel eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph A DeBoer underglow of spring social news in Montpelier April 3.
City Clerk Mackay closed his office with 419 dog licenses issued for 1905, up 72 from last year. Officials say growth in registrations reflects continuing tax and city expansion despite overall economic strain.
In Montpelier doctors declared Frederick Eastwood sane after reviewing his case. He had been sentenced for the 1899 murder of Franklin Fenn in Middlebury, later adjudged insane and confined. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. he will be sent to state prison. The board also considers licensing Dr Sim Sparhawk to run a private mental retreat in Burlington.
The new Montpelier license commission elected Henry Bolt as chairman and secretary, with O J Berry and John Meyer on the board. The board will meet to receive petitions while fixing license fees: first class 1200, second class 1500, third 860, fourth 1000, fifth 107, sixth 500, with other rates set by law or discretion.
The second annual Granite City Quoiting Club meeting at Meaker Bros hall elected A Forbes as President O Burge as Vice President C Bernin as Captain Jas Birnie as Vice Captain J W Gault as Secretary treasurer A Rensle and named an executive committee including Jas Hirma Fred Dole C Birnin Main W Smart PL Briven P Birn Invitations were sent to A Renile D W Gaull and C Birnie for joint standing committee. William Smith, son of Alex Stivitty, escaped injury when a wagon bolt failed causing shafts to strike a horse and send the wagon rolling down North Main Street near the Morse. Michael Cook and his son jumped clear while Smith clung to the reins until released.
Mrs Hilas Batchelder, a long revered resident of Topsham, wandered toward the church yard afternoon when a cellar door opened and caused a fall. She suffered a serious arm injury two inches below the shoulder and is aged well into her eighties.
