A telegraph message from El Paso reports federal reinforcements en route from Saltillo to Torreon. The message says Torreon faces no immediate danger of capture by General Villa, indicating improving security in the region.
New Orleans reports Jaile Terrazas Jr the wealthy Mexican captive of General Villa escaped after months in captivity near Chilitahwa and marched toward Saltillo. Mexico City authorities dispute rival claims on Villa's victories with rumors of Velasco surrender and rebel advances in Guerrero and Monterey, amid unconfirmed cables and wartime censorship.
General Villa states the assault on Torreon is unfinished despite reports of its fall. Heavy action raged in the Huerache canyon near southern Torreon as federal and rebel forces maneuver. Generals Maas and Herrera are advancing from Saltillo and toward the south to join Velasco forces, with rail lines cut to hinder moves.
A derailed train near Batavia Java today killed twenty natives and injured about fifty as a buffalo herd wandered onto a railroad bridge six miles from the city. The locomotive struck the herd causing the fatal wreck.
John P. Paradis of Manchester New Hampshire defeated Buyene Tremblay of the city two falls to one in the American lightweight championship match held in Montreal. Tremblay won the first fall in 47 minutes with a double bar and face hold, but Paradis surged to two straight falls in 25 and 12 minutes, winning the match. Paradis recently returned from a European tour where he defeated several top lightweights and showed marked improvement since wresting here two years ago.
Stanhope Wood Nixon of New York City, a prominent Yale junior, was arrested in New Haven on assault charges against Edward M. Everett, chief engineer of the Southern New England Telephone Co. The attack occurred October 22, during a night when iron bolts were thrown at nearby homes. Nixon reportedly confessed only that he had been drinking. he posted $1,500 bond for the hearing. His father, Lewis Nixon, a Tammany Hall leader and shipbuilder, rushed to New Haven after learning of the arrest.
Burlington April 2 Frederick Camp a soldier was sentenced to six to twelve months at hard labor in the state prison Windsor for striking an officer in Chittenden County The court adjourned until a later day as no other cases were ready.
A jumble of local society items reports visits and health news. North End residents return from Barre, a barber resigns on Pearl Street, and a year away on an uncle’s farm is meant to restore vision. Knights of Columbus hosts an Italian Fancy Work Club amateur dramatic evenings with twelve young women in the cast. Mrs. O D Shurtleff and Miss Cassie McDonald plan a week’s visit to Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Early today a blaze destroyed five hotels in St Augustine Florida along with several residences. Guests escaped in night clothes with belongings left behind while two were injured. A woman fell fatally from a third story window and another guest broke a leg leaping to safety. The Vedder house and a historic landmark were also lost as militia guarded the burned district. Property damage estimated between 2000 and 750000.
Pittsburg April 2 police report two officers seriously burned as a fire sweeps four frame houses. The blaze, in a four family tenement, destroys the structures with a loss of 550,000. Firemen rescue many residents. the father, brother, and three children are reported missing.
Arthur F. Taylor carried Mary Murphy from a burning three story wooden building on Main Street in Haverhill. Flames swept the rear, a faulty fire alarm caused delays, and Taylor suffered burns while guiding Murphy to safety. The home housed four families and $1000 in damage.
Seaford Maine April 2 three children were seriously burned when a can of gunpowder found in a rubbish pile exploded igniting their clothing. The youngsters Deear Matthews Owen B Matthews and Paul Rawger were evalued and expected to recover after treatment.
Calters West Virginia April 2 reports Gav Hafield asked the striking miners to name representatives to a panel of arbitration to seek an end to the dispute with the Pittalarg lene company. The miners’ delegates Edward Smith and others were to meet a short distance away to discuss the plan under judicial order, amid questions from authorities about compliance.
In Burlington on April 2 the county court found Sergeant Stanley Nowicki not guilty of robbing Zeb Cornell last January. Testimony recalled conflicting statements, with Lovett Hawkins denying certain remarks and James Campbell noting a whispered exchange. Officers Barber and Horton contradicted arrest statements. the jury deliberated about an hour before delivering the verdict. A trooper Staycke and a woman Mary Rikey pleaded guilty under the blanket act.
Ralph G. Whitney a commission merchant from Harvard Mass shot himself in the forehead at Harli bert's Hotel in Boston Tuesday afternoon after arriving with his father to seek a sanitarium. The 62 year old man had undergone an appendicitis operation two years earlier and never fully recovered. The body was discovered yesterday with evidence placing the time of death around 4 p.m. Whitney had come to the city with his father Monday and checked in under the name C L Smith.
Mrs Wales of Middlebury died at Rutland City hospital after surgery on Tuesday age about seventy six. Survived by daughter Mine Mabel Wales and brother John J Westfall of Boston. Funeral Friday at two o clock at Congregational Church with services and interment arrangements by A J Binek.
The Vermont Board of Taxes reduced the telephone tax valuations, lowering figures for some companies. New England and subsidiary firms in Franklin County and Champlain Valley saw smaller cuts than others, while overall state taxation will rise under the new law of 1912. Hearings in Montpelier began March 3 and closed March 20, with appeals filed by about 39 companies.
George Bailey of St Albans was jailed in Franklin county after police from St Albans arrested him in West Lebanon New Hampshire on suspicion of involvement in the Chin Kim murder case. Authorities believe he may know where watches stolen at the time of the killing are now. Rumors tied him to selling watches to railroad workers as well.
Mrs. Sadie Chick a about thirty is shot dead in a Worcester house at 31 Green Street. An unknown man who shot her turned the gun on himself and is dying in hospital. The couple in the house heard a cry then shots and found both victims. police report a struggle and that Chick died from abdominal wound with bullet through the body.
Willan Mare of Marr & Gordon reported the death of his twin brother John Marr a London Ont wholesale grocer aged about 68. Long plagued by heart disease he died suddenly after a recent heart failure attack. He leaves a wife a daughter two grandchildren one brother in London another in Scotland and two sisters in Scotland. Marr founded a major wholesale grocery firm with warehouses in London and Handon and planned burial in London with services likely Saturday.
John F. Higine, 47, recently from Lowell Massachusetts, was struck and killed almost instantly by a city bound electric street car at Trinity square. He was deaf and did not hear the approaching vehicle. The car crew continued on believing he was not aboard. No streets have been cited.
The Barre and Montpelier Traction and Power Co submits a new fare schedule to the Vermont Public Service Commission effective May 1 1914. It eliminates the workingmen tickets at 40 for 1.00 and expands regular and school fare options with transfers between Montpelier and Barre lines to ease travel while noting higher future operating costs and wage increases for conductors and motormen.
A large audience enjoyed a mixed program at the Hedding M E Church featuring ancient style performances. Miss Patterson and Miss Mary Bishop delivered solos, Mrs. Hoyt and Mrs. Higgs sang a duet, and George Troup excelled in violin solos. The Viriletta contributed music, the sunbonnet singers entertained, and the Auld Lang Syne quartet impressed. Emery Newhall led, with Miss Hooker and Miss Hallaby assisting.
Philadelphia April 2 the Pennsylvania Railroad announced retrenchment measures ending 118 passenger trains including many western line services. The move follows last week’s plan and affects Pittsburg Erie and other western divisions with substantial service reductions for the year.
John Ward of St Johnsbury Vermont was found in a wet pan of a vehicle after a failed attempt to board a freight train. He suffered a fractured left arm and was treated at a Nashua hospital on a Tuesday.
