Stephen Shufelt, Civil War veteran, died Sunday morning at his residence on South Main Street Barre after a long illness. He served as a corporal in the 2d Massachusetts infantry, enlisted May 11, 1860, and discharged May 23, 1860, later marrying Florence Baldwin in 1880. Survived by his wife, two daughters Mrs G A Wilkinson and Mrs F Curtle, a son Claude Shufelt of Newport, and two grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM at the house with Rev J B Reardon officiating. burial in Hope cemetery.
Richard Vercoe a native of England and longtime Barre resident died at his home 4 Warren Street Sunday night after a long illness. Survived by wife a daughter Miss Mypllis Vercoe and several sons including Philip and Lawrence with siblings in Cornwall England Reno Nevada and London. Born in Cornwall years ago he learned the granite cutter trade and moved to Barre by 1902 working in granite until retirement. He belonged to Rechabite lodge London and St George organization Stony Creek and was a Methodist. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm from the home conducted by Rev B T Lipsky with interment in Hope Cemetery flower ommission requested.
Mrs Oscar Emerson of Williamstown passed away Saturday night at her home after a long illness. She leaves two daughters, Mrs Edward Ryce and Myrtie Emerson. A member of the Methodist church, she will be interred Tuesday at 1 04. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Woe, pastor of the local Methodist church.
In West Rutland Massachusetts early April 1 Conductor J M Steadham and Brakeman H Tucker were burned to death when a Boston and Maine local freight train collided with a caboose at the station. Brakeman J Heiquit lex suffered a broken leg.
