Old War Veterans Over Top at Labor Day Festivities

Labor Day celebration by World War Veterans drew the crowd through downtown and the fairgrounds. About 2200 attended a ball game and races, auto show, and fire parade. Baraboo edged Portage in baseball while motor races and a jazz display entertained the crowd. Mueller’s Hall hosted a lively dance with Netzo’s orchestra after a Marine Band concert.

Kenosha Man Killed in Train Crash

Philip Miller of Kenosha was killed when his automobile stalled on the Ryan road crossing of the Milwaukee road in Oakland. Two passengers were seriously injured and may die, with no witnesses reported. The crash occurred Thursday night. Miller is believed to have been the driver.

Auto borrowers take Ford from church lot then return it

The L. B. Irish Ford was stolen from in front of the Methodist church Thursday evening and found Friday morning on Birch street between Second and Third. A spare key enabled the car to be started and no damage was reported. Suspects have not been identified.

Wisconsin river dam planned near Lone Rock and Gotham

A proposed dam across the Wisconsin river between Lone Rock and Gotham would flood bottom land up to Spring Green and power nearby cities. The project, modeled after Prairie du Lac, would use land on both riverbanks and is expected to yield about a third more power. surveys are ongoing and land purchases completed with compensation promised to affected farmers.

U W Senior Dies Saving Girl Life

Harold Thompson Murray a University of Wisconsin senior was crushed beneath a speeding Chicago auto while saving a young woman he was escorting. Murray stepped before the car to shield Miss Lucile Cumfer who was injured in the tragedy as the vehicle struck them.

Circuit court opens with no criminal cases on calendar

District Attorney Bohn has cleared the slate. next Monday Judge O Neill will oversee a docket featuring only civil matters. T C Richmond Dies Suddenly

Thomas Charles Richmond a 74 year old Madison attorney and Civil War veteran died suddenly at the general hospital in Madison while recovering from a minor abdominal operation ten days earlier. He was a noted Wisconsin orator who spoke before the state legislature on important bills and was born in Ireland in 1846.

Plain Pupils to Entertain at Sauk County Fair

Secretary S A Pelton of the Sauk County Agricultural Society reports Rev Charles Surges of Plain says about 300 pupils will attend the fair next Wednesday with complimentary tickets. The students will perform a patriotic program a soldiers drill and national songs to entertain visitors.

Regrading of Baraboo Portage Road Advances

The Baraboo Portage road near the J. S. Palmer farm is progressing with widening plans. After grading and culverts, the highway will gain federal aid and be much improved beyond initial plans. Culverts are being extended and work continues.

Three hundred forty pupils enroll at Baraboo High School, a record, with thirty more pupils than seats. Students from Ableman Loganville Merrimack Dejton Caledonia and neighboring communities attend. Supt Kingsford and faculty strive to meet the crowding issue.

Dempsey defeats Miske in quick Benton Harbor bout

In Benton Harbor Monday Jack Dempsey the world heavyweight champion scored a three round win over Billy Miske. Dempsey landed the decisive blow causing Miske to sit in a chair and blink to wakefulness as about 19 000 spectators paid to watch the slugging.

Five Porters Pinched Rum Running Charge

Federal prohibition agents arrested five porters of the Metropolitan line steamer Calvin Austin as they stepped ashore with 17 suitcases of whisky. The liquor valued at 2500 dollars. The men were brought before a federal commissioner for arraignment.
