High Money From Licenses This Year

More automobile licenses issued this year than all of last year. By late last week 117000 tags issued with revenues over 600000. Many applications still arrive for new and old cars as rush season ends. Projections near 150000 licenses for year end and next year fee rising to 10 dollars doubling motor vehicle revenue.

Train robber confession in Wisconsin case

John Schaefer admitted taking part in a passenger train robbery near Sparta last week. He waived examination in La Crosse and is held for trial in circuit court on $5,000 bail. He requested an attorney as his heart condition is described as alarming.

Richland County Youth Serves On Rockingham Gun Crew

James T. Gillingham of Gillingham Richland County served as a naval gun crewman on the steamer Rockingham. The ship was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland but the crew likely survived after taking to lifeboats. Gillingham joined the navy last fall and earned a position as a gunner and seaman in England awaiting orders from the U.S. government.

Four at Lodi join company of Reedsburg men

Lieut. H. T. Tudor was at Lodi when four young men joined the Reedsburg company. The recruits are Irwin E. Robinson Howard Kimball Ernest Schulgen and Lester Clark.

Sauk County Christian Endeavor Rally Recalls County Banquet

The Sauk County Christian Endeavor rally began at the Congregational church with junior meetings and a model C E program by Boy Scouts. Rev Farrill urged daily Christ likeness as 92 young ladies from Baraboo Reedsburg Lyons and others attended a green and white banquet with music and toasts.

Senate passes Viue Measure to vote on liquor April 1918

In a 21 to 11 vote the Evsue bill to submit the liquor referendum to a vote in April 1918 passed the senate. Attempts to amend failed and the bill goes to the governor. Dries led the process while Schultz of Milwaukee switched to the referendum side on the final roll call. The vets did not object to a suspension of the rules.

Baraboo Red Cross send aid to European relief

Baraboo Red Cross society donated a substantial set of hospital supplies including bandages gauze napkins and bed socks to New York for European relief. A May 4 1917 letter from R W Bunten of the Red Cross Supply Service at Metropolitan Tower acknowledges receipt and promises forwarding arrangements.

War Department invites Wisconsin men to join a three month military training camp at Ft Sheridan from May 8 to May 14 for officer commissions in the Officers' Reserve. At the high school Friday night a joint meeting of grade teachers heard Professor W. H. Cheever from the Milwaukee normal give advice to parents and teachers. He called the audience the most attentive in years. H. Grotophorst presided and A. C. Kingsford spoke on school work. Miss Elizabeth Jones urged half year promotions. Grace Olson sang, followed by a teachers reception for parents. Light refreshments, flag decor, and large parental turnout. Earlier, Cheever and Kingsford spoke in the morning.

Red Cross Chapter Authorized and Forming

A Friday meeting of Red Cross supporters led to officer selection with Mayor G. T. Thaever as chairman and Miss Helen Riney as vice chair. Mrs. L. H. Palmer is secretary and M. H. Mould treasurer. Board and committees to be named. a certificate authorizing the organization has been received.
