Windstorm wipes out barns and damages farms near Portage

A Mil waukee paper dispatch reports five buildings on Edward Staudenmayer farm five miles west of the city wrecked. Buildings on Charles Funk and Dave McLiesch farms moved off foundations. Five steel transmission towers toppled, trees and poles down. A woman reportedly killed near Montello. Greenfield windmill toppled with top blown off and trees uprooted.

Banker Dies After Inheriting Following Custody

District Attorney James H. Hill reports a Madison letter instructing to hold George Klein until New York sends further orders. Klein was detained on an unregistered status possession charge. As banker George Mertens died, Klein inherited about $25,000.

The Name of Baraboo and Devils Lake

An 1877 Draper interview with Dr L C Draper summarizes Winnebago origins for Baraboo and Devils Lake names. Baraboo equals the river name Hoo-cooch-ra or Shoot Fish river. Devil’s Lake cited as Ta-wahcunchunk-dah sacred water. Traditions describe a devout Winnebago prayer and a catlike animal seen rising from the lake with a protective blessing.

Madison Woman Jailed in Local Hotel Episode

Mrs. Florence Beach of Madison began a six month term in county jail after pleading not guilty to charges following an episode with traveling salesman John Markuson in a local hotel. Markuson pleaded guilty and drew one year in Waupun. Beach altered her plea at trial before Justice Kiefer.

Baraboo Forms Second Chapter of Next of Kin Movement

Rev. L. C. Ferguson of Trinity Episcopal Church is placed in charge of the Next of Kin drive in Baraboo. J. W. Martin of Milwaukee writes Baraboo will have the second chapter if feasible, with steps to begin when two leaders return from the east. Captain B N Robinson leads a national push.

Catherine Elephant Training Moves to Madison Zoo

The Madison Democrat reports Catherine the elephant, sixteen summers old, has completed training and will soon travel from New York to Henry Vilas Park. Dr. G G Dwight notes Alf T Ringling’s solo act and a planned public debut with Catherine sharing peanuts with monkeys and bears. Catherine is expected to remain in Madison for many years.

County Clerk F A Cooper clarifies fishing regulations on weight versus number. A person may catch ten pounds of legal fish regardless of how many, or two fish over ten pounds if both meet size limits. Rules apply only to species lawful to catch at this time.

Dedication of St Josephs Church Service Flag

Large crowd attends dedication at St Josephs church for the service flag with 47 stars. Knights of Columbus march, Father Doyle and Lt Doyle bless the flag, with patriotic addresses by Father O Rielly and Lt Doyle. No fireworks on July 4. displays will be in France.
