Wisconsin Women Press Strong Stand Against Mild Prohibition

Mrs. Mary Scott Johnson of Superior, president of the Wisconsin W C T U, and Mrs. George W. McCready of Baraboo, send a letter to Governor Philipp urging a firm national prohibition law. They argue opposition to prohibition has ended and warn against suggesting law evasion or a need for a “reasonably satisfactory” drink. They call for clear obedience to law and pledge support to enforce it.

Junior Prom at High School Delights With Colorful Performances

The junior class hosted a pretty prom at the high school with a Russian dance led by Harold Berg and others, a class prophecy playlet featuring Margaret Davenport and Howard Monroe, a humorous "The White Shawl" farce, and dancing in a blue and gold gym decorated venue. The Rodwell orchestra provided music and harp selections complemented supper hour entertainment.

Miss Lena Nellen Injured by Accidental Shotgun Discharge

Miss Lena Nellen aged 24 daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob Nellen of near Madison was hurt when a shotgun discharged while she scrubbed a floor at home. She suffered injuries to her arm and side and was listed as expected to recover at St Marys hospital last night.

Officer Neitzel Resigns from Police Force

Officer Herman C. Neitzel resigns from the fire and police commission after several years of service. The resignation takes effect at the start of next month. He has not chosen his next job but has several higher paying options in view.

Sauk County Ranks Nineteenth in Wisconsin Victory Loan List

The list shows Adams County first, Kenosha second, Portage third, Columbia eighth, Richland twelfth, Dane thirty ninth, Juneau forty fourth, and Clark forty fifth, with Sauk County holding the nineteenth position in the Victory loan campaign.

Dithmar Signs $40,000 Highway Bill for Devils Lake Park

Lieutenant Governor E F Dithmar signed a bill granting 40 000 dollars to aid building a road at the north end of Devils Lake State Park. The work, part of a Baraboo to lake project, will be graded by the state and cement laid with funds left by the late W W Warner. Construction to begin soon.

Edward E Hackett of 32d Division Visits Grandparents

Edward E Hackett, a member of the Thirty Second Division now in France, is visiting his grandparents Mr and Mrs J L Hackett at 1115 East Street. He went over the top five times and escaped unharmed. He says his experiences have been a great adventure in helping to bring the Germans to their senses. His home is in Montana and he expects to leave for the west soon.

Autos Collide Twice on Main Street in Reedsburg

Two car crashes occurred on Saturday afternoon in Reedsburg on Main Street. No serious injuries were reported though vehicles were damaged. Walter Fish and John Horkan collided near Wintermantle's meat market, followed by a Kilbourn man hitting Chris Wagner's Overland, causing notable dents.

Reedsburg Blind Man Receives Honor at La Crosse Event

Albert Powell of Reedsburg, a blind basket factory owner who travels citywide with only a cane, attended La Crosse for the D. O. K. third anniversary. He received a yellow tassel for good work and served two years as prelate of the Reedsburg K. P. lodge.

Miss House in Piano Recital at Carnegie Hall

Miss Mildred House appeared in a piano recital in Carnegie Hall before a large audience of friends and music lovers. She pleases with fine interpretation of classical selections and a sweet, unaffected manner. Miss Vera Finch assisted by singing two songs. Finch has a sweet voice and notable technique for her age. The note expects great things from both and follows their future careers. Miss House formerly lived in Delton and is a niece of Mrs. W. D. Stanley of Baraboo.

Madison Man Failures Second Suicide Attempt

Davies Returns Cash to Packers

Joseph E. Davies former federal trade commissioner and Democratic senatorial candidate returned 7500 dollars to Consumers' Packing company of Chicago. The money, paid for legal services in August 1918 during the firm’s capital issue bid, was handed to Judge Landis by attorney Joseph McNab.

Sunday afternoon Bruce Woodrow, while playing with friends in Portage, broke a bone in his left hip below the joint. A physician was summoned and dressed the wound. The boy is reported to be doing nicely.

Wisconsin Power and Heat Company Moves Headquarters

Wisconsin Power Light and Heat Company will relocate engineers offices from Beaver Dam to Portage near the Milwaukee road depot. Edward Kalavang will lead the Portage office with several assistants moving to live there. F H Chambers plans to move from Beaver Dam, joining Ralph Farrington and others in the shift to Portage.

Cahoon Mine Closes Down for Present

The Cahoon iron mine south of Baraboo has closed for the present. Over 100 men have been employed and will be paid at the Reinking block office. No ore has been shipped for some time and the stack covers all ground. The mine may resume after ore is shipped and there is a dumping place. It opened years ago and has been a valuable asset to Baraboo. If operations do not resume, workers will seek employment in other mines away from Baraboo.

Surprise 40th Anniversary for Rodwells At Home

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rodwell celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a surprise party hosted by the 500 club at their home. Four generations attended as relatives from Baraboo Pardeeville Barron and others enjoyed supper and a 40 candle cake. Music came from the couple and their son Clayton and wife, with an electric reading lamp gifted as a keepsake.

Roger West Dies After Gas Attack In France

FE. J. West reports the death of son Roger West aged 25 from gas exposure in France followed by pneumonia. Born in Portage he served in the 127th ambulance corps, enlisted April 3, 1917, went overseas May 1918. He arrived from Comstock Nebraska, with Mrs. West to visit Portage and Marcellon for about ten days.

Milwaukee Driver Fined for DUI After Auto Crash

Edwin Godkey of 711 Fifth Avenue faced a local court for driving under the influence after intoxication on consecutive days. Officer Neitzel served the warrant and Godkey paid a total fine and costs of 31.75 dollars for the offense and related incident.

Dedication of Ironton Church Opens New Building

The Methodist church at Ironton was dedicated Sunday with a large local crowd. The morning service cleared the remaining debt and the afternoon raised funds to buy a piano. A cyclone destroyed the old church about a year ago and the new modern building now stands in its place.

Barley-Fed Hogs Top Milwaukee Market

Sixty six head topped the Milwaukee market at twenty one dollars per hundred pounds. Swine fattened on barley instead of corn at the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station demonstrated barley’s market potential as malt demand wanes.

Madison family to extinguish home light for soldier return

The Wol denberg home in Madison will extinguish a two year burning light placed in the window when Charles Woldenberg Jr. left for military service with the Major Lorenz hospital unit in France. The custom marks his expected homecoming after arriving in New York with sister Rose and meeting the 32d. He has been commissioned lieutenant and cited for special honors.

State Historical Society Defends Books in Legislative Probe
