Winnebago Will Gather For Wisconsin Reunion

A Winnebago Indians of Wisconsin reunion will run June 28 to July 4 in La Crosse featuring an encampment of 300 on Barren Island. War dances camp fires canoe and pony races and other tribal events will highlight the Made in La Crosse week. The Board of Trade has raised $5,000 to entertain visitors.

Fatal Fall From Tower Near Portage Claims Man

A man known as Pat King fell from a fifty foot tower east of Portage on Thursday afternoon and died before a physician could arrive. The tower supported the transmission line operated by Wisconsin Power Company.

Hauling Grain From Baraboo to Milwaukee

In 1851 a Baraboo family moved from Erie County Pennsylvania to Sauk County Wisconsin by steamboat and wagon. They faced long hauls to Milwaukee for grain, using horse teams and oxen, with trips of two to three weeks. The emergence of a Baraboo flour mill and rail line offered new markets, raising local prosperity as yields and prices varied with season.

Baraboo Wins The Silver Trophy In Lodge Contest

Baraboo captured the silver cup at the fifth Baraboo valley Knights of Pythias gathering held Thursday evening. Baraboo scored 97.31 in initiation work with Reedsburg 96.77 and Kendall 95.09. Grand Chancellor A. C. Taylor attended with fifteen others from Portage as delegations from Reedsburg Kendall Lodi and other towns joined the event.

Barges Through Lock at Prairie du Sac Portage

According to the Portage Register the steel barges passed through the lock at Prairie du Sac becoming the first river craft to use the giant device. They will proceed toward the Missouri for government work as the new dam project advances and the Portage locks expand to 35 feet wide to handle traffic.

All but one of Janesville’s small milk farms have consolidated and raised the price to seven cents a quart. Housewives worry whether the remaining six cent seller can weather the storm and stay in business.

A Decided Success at Lyons Church Entertainment

Last evening a well filled Lyons church audience enjoyed a varied program. Miss Ethel Rodwell and Robert Rodwell performed to enthusiastic encores, a trio featured by Misses Jessie Martiny Nettie Kimball and Ethel Rodwell, and Miss Inez Farwell pupils presented Pandora's Box. A May pole drill and streamers impressed, Lucille Tinkham offered humorous reading, and Hugh Kelley spoke on Temperance Whiskey and Tobacco. The entertainment committee led by Mrs Alexander Smith and Mrs Pearse Sansom hosted the event, raising over $10 for the treasury despite rain.

Highway Office to Open in Courthouse

The county board highway committee and Highway Commissioner G F Post agreed to establish Post’s office in the sheriff’s room of the courthouse with Mrs Post in charge. Regular office hours will be set to allow telephone contact. Committee members: R B Griggs Baraboo James Gregory Reedsburg and R F Mercer Spring Green.

Man Linked to Portage Era Deaths Ends Life in Columbus Woodshed

John Edward Scherbart, formerly of Portage and later a Columbus resident, hanged himself in his daughter’s woodshed after a daylong drinking spree. He had killed his wife Minnie during a 1898 spree, was convicted in 1899, served part of a 16 year sentence at Waupun, and was released about three years earlier. His death appears due to despondency from drink.

Meeting of Mission Club at Congregational Church

The Mission club of the Congregational church met with Mrs. William Ritchie yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Ritchie was assisted by Mrs. George Moog Mrs. George Howard and Mrs. L. Nutting. The program included devotional exercises a report on the Madison missionary convention a paper on Circuit Riding by Motor Boat a story The Death of Paul Donkey and musical selections followed by a supper with large attendance.

Transfer of 32 patients to rebuilt Grant asylum center

On Saturday a special car will transfer 32 patients from the county hospital at Reedsburg to the rebuilt Grant county institution. About two years ago 43 patients were brought to the asylum during the Grant asylum county fire. Superintendent C F Christensen has permission to keep 11 patients, 10 men and one woman, at the facility.

Peach Trees Bloom on Second Avenue Homes

Peach trees in bloom at the homes of Wm. Hatch and M. Riney on Second Avenue. At Riney’s, blossoms blossomed last year but frost nipped the buds. this year the blossoms are hoped to develop into luscious peaches.
