Windsor farmer convicted of lesser crime in murder case

Hartwell Farwell of Windsor was found guilty of second degree manslaughter for the killing of Phil Houston, his neighbor and his sister’s sweetheart, on Jan 10. The jury deliberated 48 hours. sentencing by Judge E Ray Stevens will range from four to seven years, after the defense argued self defense.

Kilbourn To Host Wisconsin State Band Tournament

Kilbourn will host the State Band Tournament of Wisconsin boys bands from June 3 to 4 with 25 to 30 bands expected to participate and more than 509 players anticipated at the event.

Rainbow Seen Near Baraboo Friday Night

A phenomenon described as a rainbow was observed Friday night around 12:30 by C. and N. W. railroad staff in Baraboo. Night train dispatcher J. C. Barry and fellow employee Glen Orton reported the sighting.

In the northeast sky a rainbow appeared shortly after a shower as the moon shone brightly. Mr Barry said there were no colors when he watched it, while earlier observers reported some prismatic shades.

Local Girl Schmidt Wins Second in State Essay Prize

Miss Elizabeth Schmidt of First Street, a high school sophomore, took second place in the statewide essay contest by the Wisconsin Osteopathic Association and earned a $50 prize. Her sister, Catherine Schmidt, recently won first place in the local declamatory contest. Judges were members of the State Osteopathic Association.

Sunday schools parade lights up Baraboo streets

Baraboo hosted a Friday afternoon automobile parade by 106 cars and about 1000 participants from several churches. George McArthur and M C Crandall led the organizing committee, with students and families touring nearly every city block ending at the M E church.

Moving Pictures of Rattlesnakes Filmed in Baraboo Bluffs

On Sunday in the Baraboo bluffs W W Gillman Madison Elmer Keitel and others filmed moving pictures of rattlesnakes. Gillman studies Wisconsin snakes while Keitel is famed as a local snake catcher. They ventured around snake dens on the bluffs as a hazards. No casualties reported.

John H. Patterson founder and chairman of National Cash Register died suddenly aboard a train bound for Atlantic City. The Dayton based magnate led NCR to prominence and shaped early American retail technology.

Secret Fraternities Debate Prompts High School Vote

A Friday debate in Miss Olive Skinner's room at the high school resolved that secret fraternities in the high school should be abolished. The 7B affirmative team included Walber Webster Laverne Lawsche John Shiels Orrin Evans. The 7A Annex negative team included Richard Fosner Kenneth Gaston James Hill. Judges Walter Rummell Robert Pease Ralph Compton voted unanimously for the affirmative. Roland Willey served as chairman.

Cottage Burns at Devils Lake on Messenger Shore

The Treadwell summer cottage at Devils Lake on Messenger shore near Chicago burned Sunday night. Mrs and daughter escaped uninjured after the blaze broke out while the family slept. Firefighters kept flames from adjacent cottages and the bluff fire was put out by morning. Loss partly insured. the building was about 20 years old and valued at 2500 plus improvements.

Baraboo Valley Ministers Meet in Reedsburg

Baraboo Valley ministers gathered at the Baptist church in Reedsburg on Monday. Rev. Goodenough of Lyons presented on Divine Authority and Inspiration of the Bible in support of verbal inspiration. Rev. Dexter of Elroy spoke on Divine Healing and contrasted Christian Science with Biblical teaching. Several pastors from Baraboo LaValle Elroy Reedsburg and New AlbanyInd attended with visiting Rev Farrell assisting at LaValle.

Reedsburg plans a new reservoir to boost water supply at an estimated cost of about 5000 dollars. The project aims to improve local water capacity and reliability for residents and businesses.

Lewis Kesler assistant master of Madison Boy Scouts spoke to 12 to 18 year olds at the Congregational church about how scouting builds physical, mental, social and spiritual qualities. Boys demonstrated knots signaling and fire lighting. a Madison record setting fire start was shown. A Presbyterian troupe and a Glenville group are organized under Rev. E C Henke.

Charles E. Palmer returned from Colorado with an iron cattle brand from S. M. Bussard of Colorado Springs. Brands mark ownership after roundup, are registered yearly, and listed in the Colorado Brand Book 1916. Baraboo Readers Hear 1847 U S Land Patent Details

A Sauk County historical note describes Thomas R. Williams presenting a United States land patent dated February 11, 1847 to Rupert Owen heir of Evan Owen, a late private in Snyder's Company of the 16th United States Infantry. The patent covers land in Caledonia with sale at Mon Earl Point and bears President Zachary Taylor’s signature. Robert Owen is identified as Williams’ grandfather. A Ruth M. Baraboo High School defeated Merrimack 15 to 14 in a tense Friday game at the local ball grounds.
