Bandit Robs Passengers on Train Near Sparta

Description of a robber aboard Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha rail line No. 412 near Sparta forced crew to compliance and searched sleeping passengers. Brakeman John Hackett, kicked from a moving rear car, crawled to a Medary signal tower despite injuries. Conductor W F Frenz alerted police as a posse searched for the suspect.

Diamond Hill Community Club Hosts Notable Rural Meeting

At Diamond Hill near North Freedom the Diamond Hill Community Club heard leader Lily Andrews of Baraboo lead community singing while W S Pease and J T Bates spoke on the value of local groups. President G E Veeck illustrated farm accounting as A S Kingsford urged patriotism and progress in Sauk County. Mrs George W Davies, Miss Andrews, Mrs Alice Veeck and others attended.

Transmission line survey completed to Cahoon mine Baraboo

The Prairie du Sac to Baraboo transmission line survey is finished. Wires will be stretched immediately with wooden poles, routing from Cahoon mine south of town to the Baraboo power house, aided by a right-of-way man with the survey team.

Indian Sentenced to Five Years for Shooting near Mather

Fred Little George an Indian man was convicted in Mans ton circuit court and sentenced to five years at Waupun for assault with intent to murder in a November 10, 1916 shooting case at W A Fowler’s home near Mather. Miss Ida Attridge of Baraboo barely escaped a bullet.

Baby Week in Baraboo Highlights Infant Care Education

Baraboo's Twentieth Century club staged Baby Week at the library with talks on infant hygiene and maternal care. Health Officer L W Sayles presented birth and death charts, praising hygienic and eugenic education to improve future babies while noting local waterways and milk quality. Edison and Victrola numbers accompanied the program, with outfits prepared by club members.

Prized Domestic Science Exhibition Supports Mothers Club

The meeting showcased practical patterns and a new washable waterproof material from the university extension department. Two Supreme Court Appeals In Baraboo and Spring Green

Judge O Neill settled the city of Baraboo’s bridge automobile driving case bill of exceptions. City Attorney Cady will perfect the appeal this week. Attorney T W King of Spring Green filed Mrs Rose Hill’s supreme court appeal from the Post suit arising from Spring Green hotel property services. The jury awarded Hill, but O Neill set it aside and Post was awarded costs, triggering Hill’s appeal.

Opening Day at New Farmers and Merchants Bank

The Farmers and Merchants Bank opened in Baraboo in a stone building at Fourth and Oak with N H Gerber guiding tours. New quarters feature beamed ceilings and quartersawed oak, plus twentieth century enhancements and direct lighting. President George C Astle and Victor R Schaefer the clerk assisted. B E Trimpey organized the bank’s launch and brought the Gerbers to Baraboo.

O. D. Whitehill sold the Wonewoc Reporters to Leslie P. Shear of Hillsboro. Whitehill has no announced plans for the future.

Suit Alleges Alienation of Wife in Baraboo Case

A. H. Clark filed papers Thursday in Baraboo alleging Edward Koerth now of Adams caused Mrs Ethel J. Schroeder to leave her husband, prompting a $10,000 damages suit. Schroeder, of Baraboo, seeks divorce action begun last February, trial set for fall. The case involves a Baraboo family with a five year old daughter. Koerth has children by prior marriages.

Arrest Suspect Held in Northwestern Train Robbery Case

John Seiffer, a stranger, is jailed in La Crosse on suspicion of holding up a Northwestern passenger train at Sparta Wednesday morning at gunpoint. Sheriff Webber arrested him after he changed small coins into bills and he matches the bandit description. Conductor W. F. Frenz of Baraboo will try to identify Seiffer. Missing watches were not found.

Baraboo Accepts Warner Bequest For Roadway

Baraboo will receive a $40,000 gift from the late W. W. Warner for a concrete highway from the Baraboo high bridge to Devils Lake, about two and a half miles. Madison declined a $75,000 park gift and the $40,000 option to Baraboo now stands, with local officials seeking legal guidance to obtain the funds.

Shade Bakery Closes on Oak Street After Six Years

H G Shade has closed his Oak Street bakery citing rising product prices and ongoing losses. Mr and Mrs Shade and their daughter operated the shop for six years and say they are grateful for patronage. Shade will pursue other work.

Political Equality League Meeting Delayed Discussion

The Political Equality League met Wednesday afternoon with poor attendance as attorney F R Bentley was absent. Suffrage topics dominated the discussion including Montana's Jeannette Rankin presenting her first speech in Congress in favor of a federal voting rights amendment. The debate highlighted the difficulty of amending multiple state constitutions versus federal action.

In Lodi on Friday night the oratorical and declamatory contest among Reedsburg North Freedom and Waunakee produced winners. Lloyd Hackett of Reedsburg spoke on Americansim and Harry McGuire of Waunakee on The Hope of Peace. First in declamatory style was Ann Faber of Reedsburg with The Man With One Talent. second was Aileen O Keefe of Waunakee with The Lion and the Mouse.

Will Sail for Front in France Nurse Orders Sailed

Fire on Fred Halbersieben Farm Near Reedsburg

A small fire spread across a straw stack and barn at the Fred Halbersieben farm southeast of Reedsburg on Thursday. Neighbors helped extinguish the flames before major damage occurred. cause of the fire was not determined.
