Assessors Gather for Tax Valuation Meeting at Courthouse

The Sauk County assessors meet Thursday with ten new officers among thirty five present despite Sauk City’s absence. Charles H. Stone urges obedience to law while noting assessors have no say in tax amounts. He explains taxes fund schools and roads, and values should reflect property sale prices. land valuations remain uncertain amid few real estate sales. Horses and livestock values are adjusted downward from last year, with cattle, calves, sheep and hogs priced per head or per hundred pounds. May 1 shipping duties fall on the last owner of property changing hands or the shipper if stock is received.

Auto and Buggy Collision on Fourth Street

Mrs. Arthur Attridge was thrown from a buggy after Jacob Israel's auto struck the side of the buggy near Ash and Fourth. The horse was loosened and dragged Attridge several feet while Miss Clara Attridge and the baby were uninjured. Attridge suffered back injuries and is resting at home. Witnesses say the car did not judge the buggy's path. the driver claims slow speed. Also listed are county assessors for county towns and cities including Baraboo Reedsburg and others.

Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Publish Comprehensive Directory

The Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association releases a detailed directory of reputable breeders across the state. It includes secretary addresses for national and state groups, county agents, breed photographs, and notes on Guernsey Holstein and Jersey lines with long lists of breeders by locality.

Humane Prize Essay Awards Highlight City Competition

Prizes in the Humane Prize Essay and Poster contests were awarded across grade levels with Josephine Bassett George Cooper Fola Case and John Taras among top finishers. Judges included Miss Belle Potter Miss Edna Varnell Mrs Mamie Haines Hackett and E B Trimpey. Prof George Wagner of Wisconsin delivered talks to junior high parochial and high school students.

New Health Officer Named In City

At a health and water committee meeting the 1922 board of health was organized with T. R. Deppe as president Arthur Judevine secretary and Henry Graff as member Dr E Tryon chosen as city health officer replacing Dr L W Sayles who held the post for about twelve years He will begin duties May 1 and the council has confirmed the new members.

Narrow Escape at Reedsburg Car Hits Train Crossing

At Reedsburg's main crossing west of the depot a car driven by Will Schroeder and his wife failed to see a train on a handcar with two linemen. The impact threw the car, smashed the top and fenders, and slightly injured the Schroeders though Mrs. Schroeder suffered a lip cut. Nearby onlookers gathered as they were treated.

Shults Appointed Baraboo Postmaster

Frank E. Shults has been notified that his Baraboo postmaster appointment is confirmed by the senate and will begin after formalities. Since Alger C. Pearson’s death, Oscar Doppler has filled the vacancy awaiting a new official. Shults previously served as postmaster from August 11, 1911, to September 8, 1916.

Accused girl taken ill after arrest in Baraboo case

Sheriff Nietzel pursued Miss Kreitzer after allegations she stole clothing and two heirloom pieces. The girl traveled from Spring Green to Plain and then Sauk City, receiving medical care during a cataleptic attack. She was returned to Baraboo with her mother as witnesses reacted to her condition.

Annual Declamatory Contest Highlights High School Event

The high school annual declamatory contest drew a large audience with six contestants in a well organized program led by Miss Maysel Evans and Mrs F H Horstman. Katherine Schmidt won first place with Mary Gusta and Irma Thompson took second with The Pretensions of Charlotte.

Missionary Society Meets At Richardson Home

The Presbyterian church society gathered Friday at Mrs. H. R. Richardson’s home with good attendance and an engaging program. The May meeting is planned for Mrs. J. W. Wright’s residence.

Baraboo Wins Approval for Ringling Hospital Project

Baraboo gains state Industrial Commission consent to convert the Ringling home into a hospital. The two story structure will be approved with safety changes including a second-floor exit, an elevator, and removal of a steam heater wall. O D Brandenburg reports two Madison meetings with Chairman Wilcox and calls for cooperative details with hospital officials. Inspector Callan and Attorney Malone reviewed the residence with Sisters and Father O Reilly.

Prairie du Sac Fire Narrowly Ends in Injury

Prairie du Sac fire crew rushed to a roof blaze when George Accola, a department member, fell from the wagon attachment and was bumped and nearly run over by cars behind the wagon. He was rescued and placed on a car running board with only minor injuries.
