Liberty Day in Baraboo as 53 youths enter war training

Liberty Day observances in Baraboo featured store closures and school dismissals as 53 young men left for Camp Grant Rockford for training. Lieutenant Rieser spoke of care, unit cohesion, and duty while A S Kingsford urged home support for liberty bonds. The procession to the station included local officials, veterans groups, scouts, and a long list of volunteers from Baraboo and surrounding towns.

Steam Kills Oysters in Bed

Rey and Mrs Albion E Smith of Madison visit Baraboo relatives and report a severe oyster kill in the harbor from a recent cold spell and salty sea water intrusion. The same wind damaged an orange crop in Florida and water pipes froze last winter. The Smiths formerly lived in Delton and Spring Green where Rev Smith served as pastor.

Auto Court Club Opens Sauk County Season

The Sauk County automobile court club officially opened the 1918 season. Edward Jansen of Prairie du Sac drove into Sauk City with his muffler wide open, drawing complaints. Sheriff Welk and Officer Brilliott escorted him to Baraboo, and Jansen paid a ten dollar initiation fee plus costs. The incident spurred hopes of quieter village life as the club starts anew.

Wool growers offer entire US output to government

Wool growers in a conference with the War Industries Board offered to turn over the entire wool output of the United States to the government. Prices would be based on the washed wool price for July 30 last.

Artillery Train Passes Through Sauk County This May

A large company of artillery, about eighteen hundred men with guns, horses, mules, and trucks, will march from Camp Grant to Camp Robinson around mid May, passing through Baraboo. They have secured thirty acres near the Druse place east of Reedsburg for an overnight stop opposite the Fox farm.
