The dilapidated commissary building on the Fox river near Portage has been torn away by owner RH W Port. Carpenter Lumber Company Changes Ownership

George Carpenter sells the controlling interest in his lumber and produce business. A stock company will be formed with Carpenter as a stockholder and T. R. Deppe of Reedsburg named general manager. The Stewart yard and produce business are included. Wakefield remains in charge at Stewart. Deppe plans to move to Baraboo and may work in the western town area. Carpenter seeks relief from his heavy burden and will spend time on the farm.

Sweets Lands Editor in Court

Editor-elect Arthur W. Hallam of the Badger at Madison faced the student court for alleged violation of conference election rules. He pleaded not guilty as the first such case before the tribunal. The adjournment to next Monday followed witness shortages as prosecutors allege he distributed bitter sweets to women voters to sway ballots.

Death of Katie OConnell in Minneapolis Hospital

Friends in Webster Saskatchewan and Rochester mourn the death of Katie OConnell aged nineteen. She died April 20 in Asbury Hospital Minneapolis after an operation for appendicitis. Her remains will be taken to the family home in South Dakota for burial. Mrs Degan of this city is her aunt.

Bear hunt near Lodi recalls 1859 chase and buckshot capture

Pioneer marks another birthday for H C Noyes

H C Noyes of 1112 West Washington Avenue celebrated his seventy sixth birthday on Tuesday with a small gathering at his home. Born in Chelsea Wisconsin in 1844 he joined the Seventh Wisconsin regiment in the Civil War and saw action at Kenesaw Mountain and the Atlantic campaign. He later served as assistant postmaster at Baraboo and was city treasurer for two terms. He and his wife moved to Madison in 1900 and have resided there since. A number of friends attended the celebration including Rev E Horth and Rev W J McKay along with several local couples.

Local Illness Updates From City Residents

The city reports ongoing illness with S. H. Wood in about the same condition. Jerry Scanlan shows some improvement after a period of serious illness. Mrs. H. E. Springer remains bedridden at her parents’ Fourth Avenue home with cold and neuralgia after returning from Seattle earlier this week.

Baraboo Resident in Kansas Railroad Wreck

E V Hocum from Baraboo was in a wreck at Willis Kansas when a Missouri Pacific freight train derailed as it passed the depot. An oil car exploded killing one worker and injuring two others. Hocum’s wagon was wrecked but not derailed and he was saved. He was en route to Paoli Kansas to join the Patterson carnival. Mrs Hocum’s letter said he had not yet arrived by Wednesday due to the delay.

Baraboo Couple Wedded Quietly at Presbyterian Manse

Miss Ethel Jones and August Schroeder were married at 1 pm by Rev. E. C. Henke. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Jones. The groom, son of Mr and Mrs Martin Schroeder of Fairchild, is a Northwestern road fireman. They will live in Fairchild.

Windy night topples chimney cap near Trimpey home

During a high wind Mr and Mrs E B Trimpey faced an odd incident as a galvanized iron chimney top was blown off and found across the pavement with the brick remaining in its original position on the stack suggesting a remarkable aeronautic effect.

Seed corn runs scarce as Toole firm sells out stock

Seed corn is scarce with William Toole and Sons reporting all stock of the North Star sold. They could have sold several carloads more as buyers from Chicago sought two cars of the famous maize. Last fall’s poor seed yield fuels the high demand.

Alice the elephant goes to Milwaukee Museum for mounting

The Milwaukee Museum receives Alice the eight foot tall Asiatic elephant from Ringling Brothers after its death. Taxidermists remove the skin and skeleton for mounting while meat is rendered and bones preserved. The process includes bleaching, drying in sun, and assembling the specimen for display.

Ladies' Social Circle Meets in Lyons

The Ladies' Social Circle of Lyons gathered Thursday with Mrs. Fred Berkley. Attendees discussed limiting church work, agreeing a cement porch 14 by 8 feet would be built after masonwork is finished, then a vestibule later. The group added 25 to the church repair fund and thanked contributors including P. H. Crossman for coordinating progress.
