R L Glazier reports no hay shipments from Baraboo this winter due to a car shortage. A grower near Baraboo tried to ship a carload to Kilbourn at 25 dollars per ton but could not secure a car and had to sell elsewhere. Hay is consumed locally by animals. roads are frozen and markets scarce.
The Baraboo firm of Gustafson and Prader dissolves as L Prader retires. G T Gustafson buys Prader’s share and continues the jewelry business at 528 Oak Street. Prader will run Devils Lake concession affairs independently. Gustafson remains at the same location with prior lines of merchandise.
Mrs. Hattie M. Wilson of Danzig N D is celebrated for The Hilton Twins or Sinful is a book praised by Redfield Journal-Observer and Ellendale teacher Prof Black. The piece notes Wilson taught in Mel ll a county seventeen years and served as county superintendent twice. She visits with daughter Mrs. Madison and will hold a sale of personal property at north of Danzig next week.
Sergeant Harry A Race of the war insurance section 32d division sailed from New York near January 31 and has cabled his father Abner Race Portage that he is safe and well. He is nephew to C M McDuffie of Baraboo who has four nephews in the war including Harry McDuffie now a commander of a U boat chaser. He has crossed the Atlantic twice since the war began and was on the vessel carrying the first American troops to Europe.
Alonzo Winn of Portage died at Camp Grant after injuries from freezing his feet and being kicked by a horse that affected his kidneys. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Chauncy Winn received the telegram and rushed to the camp. The death occurred on Thursday.
Sauk County volunteers pack peak numbers at court house workrooms as 240 women attend over six years, plus 75 cutters and many knitters, with 5 358 surgical dressings produced last week. High school girls also contribute two evenings weekly under Miss Christian Wright, as gauze bolsters prepare for shipment. The Red Cross bulletin lauds the effort as vital to civilization and humanity.
Veteran writer recounts Burr Robbins and Adam LeClair in Ringling era acts, noted shows planning California tent tours. It cites Sells Floto Barnes and Bernardi ventures, Barnum and Bailey history, and a McAdoo led railroad stance promising unimpeded circus movement for the coming season.
In Washington the senate has barred the way to government ownership of railroads. The action blocks a proposal to place railways under federal control and ownership.
The Wisconsin Conservation Commission plans to ask the legislature for a short open deer season in Sauk and Richland counties after deer damaged corn on A. A. Thompson’s Twin Bluffs area farm. Deputy wardens reported 25 deer entered the Thompsons field and two were killed, with 30 more seen on Sunday night. 31 shocks of corn were destroyed and 21 more were being eaten.
The Baraboo News Publishing Co announces it cannot provide garden seeds to subscribers this year. The seed supplier faces shortages and will supply a limited mix at triple prior costs. They hope to resume seeds next year.
Sauk County rural letter carriers met at La Valle for their annual convention with about twenty five attendees. Entertainment came from La Valle post office staff and quartet. patriotic songs and addresses were given by Postmaster Towne and Assistant Postmaster Claridge. Elected officers include E A Richards president R P Plummer vice president and W W Morse treasurer. Delegates to the state convention are A C Mabbott and W W Morse. Next meeting set for Merrimack on Labor Day.
At Portage the exemption board has passed the following for active military service. Names include William G. Anderson of Lodi and Lawrence P. Arnold of Portage among others. A separate list refers Oliver McQueeney and David Smith of Portage and several Kilbourn or Bara Boo residents to the district board.
Fuel administrators urge mass meeting cut-a-cord clubs timber tracts chopping bees badge awards and club interest to stockpile fuel for next winter while coal must be used to bunker ships.
Baraboo restaurants and hotels serve bread biscuits and buns made from barley rye graham oatmeal and corn. Patrons welcome the change from the prior patent wheat flour diet and support patriotic compliance with food administration rules.
Lieutenant Harold Stecker, who died recently at Waco, had paid less than $15 in premiums and was under 60 days a policy owner. His mother at Necedah collected the $10,000 insurance benefit.
The Wisconsin Senate killed the Burke Dill bill granting Governor Philipp power to name Husting's successor by a 23 to 2 vote. Assembly approved Otto's resolution for a spring special election by 80 to 10, but the Senate killed it 1 to 12. Governor remained noncommittal on April versus November election timing.
Governor Philipp says legislature's vote shows a chance for people to decide the senator ship and that primary advocates must take responsibility. Election date set for April 2 with March 19 primary. The Milwaukee Sentinel lists Joseph E. Davies as a Democratic candidate backed by the federal administration. no clear Republican candidate yet. Possible unity on a loyalty candidate is unlikely given time. La Follette camp undecided. Lt Governor Dithmar mentioned but not settled. Senator Whitman is a leading conservative Republican prospect. ex Governor McGovern expected to enter. La Follette associates mention James Thompson as a potential candidate. Judge Martin Lueck urged by Democrat Byron Barwig as a candidate with potential election.
