Long Public Service Editor Perkins Dies at 74 in Sioux City
George D. Perkins 74, longtime Journal editor at Sioux City and influential Iowa journalist, died at home after a long illness. Born February 29 1840 in Holly New York he built a career from Baraboo Wisconsin printer to Cedar Falls Gazette founder to Journal owner. He served in the Thirty first Iowa Infantry and later held roles as Immigration Commissioner United States Marshal and four term congressman. The Des Moines Leader lauded him as father of Sioux City journalism and Nestor of Iowa journalism noting his new building project valued at 175900 dollars.
